FLCC Breaks Ground on Victor Campus Center

VICTOR, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2008) – Top officials from Finger Lakes Community College were joined by State and Ontario County representatives today to break ground on FLCC’s new Victor Campus Center. The state-of-the-art, 26,000-square-foot campus center will serve as the science and technology hub for the college, while also offering traditional programs in liberal arts and business.

The FLCC Victor Campus Center will meet the needs of residents in this area who are interested in pursuing a degree close to home. The center will offer degree, certificate, and transfer programs in the areas of science, technology, architecture and design, business, and liberal arts.

This center will also meet the workforce needs of technology-based companies in the area, and the problem-based, hands-on curriculum will allow for internships and field experiences with these local businesses.

“This is a great day for FLCC and Ontario County,” said FLCC President Dr. Barbara G. Risser. “The Victor Campus Center will provide a valuable educational resource in this area. In challenging economic times, it is important for us to remember that community colleges educate the local workforce and are a key part of the solution.”

FLCC will offer a robust course load in Victor, reducing the need for many area students to travel to the Canandaigua Campus.

“FLCC’s Victor Campus Center will help Ontario County achieve our mission to retain jobs and help our companies and entrepreneurs create wealth and grow,” said Ontario County Economic Development Director Mike Manikowski. “Together, FLCC and Ontario County are making Ontario County a better place to live.”

Approximately 80 percent of FLCC graduates remain in the Ontario County area and FLCC and its students and graduates already account for 2.3 percent of the area’s annual income. FLCC and Ontario County officials expect those numbers to increase with the creation of the Victor Campus Center.

“By providing a workforce with the skills needed for our local businesses, more young people will be living and working in Ontario County,” added Risser. “The Victor Campus Center is very much in keeping with the College’s mission to provide a supportive, learning-centered environment that empowers our students, provides enriching life experiences, and enhances the quality of life throughout our community.”

“You can’t beat what FLCC students and Ontario County will be getting here; a top-notch education just steps away from premier technology-based companies,” Manikowski added. “They will literally be working in the shadow of their future jobs, jobs that will continue to attract and retain world-class talent and enterprises here.”
