FLCC to Offer New Degree Program in Viticulture and Enology
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 5, 2009) – The Finger Lakes Community College Board of Trustees approved a new associate in applied science degree program in viticulture and enology. The program proposal must be approved by the State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Department of Education before students will be eligible to enroll. The College anticipates accepting applications for this new program in the fall 2009 semester.
The associate in applied science degree in viticulture and enology is designed for students who plan to pursue careers in the wine and grape industry. Students will be able to complete their formal education in two years and begin a career, or they may choose to transfer to a four-year college.
“With the growth of the wine industry in New York state and the Finger Lakes, this program will meet a definite need for the workforce of our region,” stated Dr. Barbara G. Risser, president of FLCC. “In developing the curriculum, we were able to collaborate with and draw upon the expertise of local wine companies, winery owners, and other industry experts who provided valuable insight into the structure and content of the curriculum.”
The viticulture and enology program will include both hands-on and knowledge-based curriculum with an emphasis on sustainable growing practices and environmental considerations in vineyard operations and management. Courses will include Introduction to Wines and Vines, Basic Viticulture, Vineyard Management, and Introduction to Enology, as well as summer and fall practicum requirements, giving students practical experience in understanding the seasonal considerations in vineyard management and grape-growing practices. Courses will be offered at the Canandaigua campus, as well as the Geneva Campus Center.
