FLCC Announces Go Green Student of the Year

Constellation Brands Donates $1 Million Gift to Finger Lakes Community College

Canandaigua, N.Y. (July 24, 2009) – Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) President Dr. Barbara Risser announced today that Constellation Brands, Inc. is making a $1 million gift to the College, the largest donation in the College’s history. In recognition of the gift, the College’s main address is being named Marvin Sands Drive in honor of Constellation Brands’ late founder Marvin Sands. As an investment in the College’s capital expansion project, the $1 million donation from Constellation Brands will be matched by New York State.

Presenting the gift to FLCC were Constellation Brands President and CEO Robert Sands and Chairman of the Board Richard Sands.  Also participating in the event was the new State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, who made her first visit to FLCC as part of a statewide tour of all 64 SUNY campuses. During her remarks, Zimpher emphasized the need for public-private partnerships in support of public education.

FLCC President Dr. Risser accepted the gift on behalf of the College, saying: “The entire FLCC community thanks you for this gift and your generous commitments through the years.  Your support is instrumental to the success of the College and its ability to serve our community.  A little more than a year ago, the College laid out an ambitious and exciting strategic plan that will take Finger Lakes Community College to the next level.  Enhancing our facilities will allow us to better serve the educational needs of today’s students.”

The gift is dedicated to support the College’s mission to provide affordable, accessible education through an enhanced learning-centered environment.  With the gift directed in this manner, it will be matched dollar-for-dollar by New York State. Enhancements to the Canandaigua campus will include the construction of a new Student Center and auditorium.  Existing space in the main classroom building will be renovated to include 26 new state-of-the-art classrooms and updated laboratories.  Planning is also underway for the transformation of the College’s Geneva Campus Center to be located on the former Geneva Middle School site.  In addition, the College will open a new Victor Campus Center in January 2010 that will focus on science and technology while offering high-quality liberal arts and transfer programs for which FLCC is well-known.
“This is a true public-private partnership,” said Constellation Brands President and CEO Robert Sands.  “We are very committed to the Finger Lakes region where our company was founded in 1945 by my late father Marvin Sands.  Our mission is to help support this region as a great place to live, work and raise a family.  Community colleges are essential to the fabric of our community and investing in FLCC will make an impact and real difference in people’s lives. In this case, our gift leverages public funding and represents an investment in the education and workforce development of today’s students and future generations,” said Sands.

Philanthropic giving to public colleges and universities is a cornerstone to the success of the public education model.  “I am delighted to celebrate this major gift from Constellation Brands which is an outstanding example of a public and private investment,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher.  “In this case the Constellation Brands’ gift allows New York State to invest an equal amount in FLCC.  As part of my tour of all 64 SUNY campuses, the first phase in developing a strategic plan for the 64-campus State University system SUNY, I am very proud to celebrate this important milestone for FLCC and the communities it serves,” said Zimpher.

“Knowing the tremendous work FLCC does to provide education in our community makes this announcement especially gratifying.  Constellation Brands has enjoyed a long history with Finger Lakes Community College.  We are thrilled to strengthen our relationship with FLCC and announce this gift at the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center on the College campus,” said Sands.

In recognition of the gift, effective July 24, FLCC’s address will bear the name of Constellations Brands’ founder, Marvin Sands. The College’s new main address in Canandaigua will be 3325 Marvin Sands Drive. Also effective later this month, Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center’s new address will be 3355 Marvin Sands Drive.
