FLCC Bridge Program and Community Action in Self Help Celebrate Partnership and Recognize Program Participants
Canandaigua, N.Y. (Dec. 17, 2008) – Representatives from Finger Lakes Community College, Community Action in Self Help, Inc., Wayne County, and New York State came together to celebrate a partnership built on the premise of helping those in need become more self-sufficient. At this celebration, Bridge Program participants received certificates for completing a basic computer training and workforce preparedness program. The program is designed to help those in need gain valuable workplace skills. The program also includes career counseling, and support to help participants find and maintain employment. Read more
FLCC Recognizes Sustainability-Minded Students with Limelight Award
Canandaigua, N.Y. (Dec. 11, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College, in Partnership with the Canandaigua Wegmans, awarded its first-ever student Limelight Award to four deserving FLCC students.
“The Limelight Award is designed to recognize FLCC students who have integrated sustainability into their daily lives. Sustainability is more than just recycling. Sustainability means meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is about creating a better world for all to live in,” stated Kim Babcock, FLCC Sustainability Coordinator. “I am very honored to present our first Limelight Awards to these four FLCC students who are truly ‘walking the talk’ when it comes to sustainable living.” Read more
FLCC President’s Holiday Reception Celebrates the Spirit of Giving
Canandaigua, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College President, Dr. Barbara G. Risser hosted a holiday reception last Friday. The theme of the event was, “A Celebration of Giving.” In preparation for the event, students, faculty, and staff were asked for donations to the FLCC Food Cupboard. Walmart in Canandaigua donated reusable shopping bags at half price to be filled with donations of non-perishables, as well as gift cards for local grocery stores. The holiday reception was held in the cafeteria on campus with more than 200 students, faculty, staff, and family members in attendance. Read more
Ontario County and FLCC Announce Agreement to Purchase Current Geneva Campus Center
Geneva, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2008) – Officials from Ontario County, Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) and the Geneva City School District were joined by State representatives to announce that Ontario County has agreed on a fair price to purchase the property at 63 Pulteney St. from the Geneva City School District as a permanent location for the FLCC Geneva Campus Center. FLCC Announces Honors Courses for the Spring 2009 Semester
Canandaigua, N.Y. (Dec. 2, 2008) – Three honors seminars will be offered at Finger Lakes Community College during the Spring 2009 semester (Jan. 26 – May 15). Both classes are three-credit honors courses and are open to all FLCC students.
“Honors Seminar Topic I: Perspectives on Tolkien” (HON 100-90) will be offered on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8:20 p.m. in the Honors House and will be led by Assistant Professor of English Trista Merrill and Assistant Professor of Computing Sciences Larry Dugan. This course will critically examine the lasting influence and power of the Lord of the Rings saga in its different media. Students will read the novels, view the films, and play the multiplayer online game in order to explore how different media handle the same material. Students will discuss such issues as character and plot development, storytelling styles, cultural and historical contexts, benefits and limitations of various media, identity and role-playing games, and the role of audience in storytelling. Placing the three media into their socio-cultural contexts will allow us to explore such issues as the role of storyteller, the importance of the visual, and the role of ‘game’ in today’s society.
