FLCC Woodsmen’s Compete at Paul Smiths College
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2008) – At a Woodsmen competition at Paul Smiths College last weekend, the Finger Lakes Community College women’s woodsmen finished in second place in a field of six teams with 1043 points just ten points behind the first place women’s team from Paul Smith’s College. The women’s first team from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) placed third with 938; the SUNY Cobleskill women placed sixth with 492 points. Read more
FLCC to Host Veterans Day Ceremony
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony to honor students, faculty, and staff of the College, as well as community members who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces. FLCC Breaks Ground on Victor Campus Center
VICTOR, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2008) – Top officials from Finger Lakes Community College were joined by State and Ontario County representatives today to break ground on FLCC’s new Victor Campus Center. The state-of-the-art, 26,000-square-foot campus center will serve as the science and technology hub for the college, while also offering traditional programs in liberal arts and business. Read more

FLCC Secures Two New Grant Awards
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College has been awarded two valuable grants in order to upgrade facilities and improve student record storage.
The first grant was awarded to the Therapeutic Massage and Integrated Health program by the Williams Family Foundation in the amount of $9,000. Mary Cappozzi, professor of massage therapy/integrated health and nursing plans to use the funds to make necessary upgrades to the massage therapy facilities. Read more
FLCC Presents 2nd Annual Campus Sustainability Day
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (October 17, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College through its Global Awareness program presents its 2nd Annual Campus Sustainability Day, Wednesday, October 22 at the Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive.
The program is co-sponsored by the FLCC Sustainability Committee and is free and open to the public as part of a national effort of colleges and universities to address their responsibilities in promoting and establishing sustainability policies and practices. Nationwide, Campus Sustainability Day is sponsored by the Society for College and University Planning and is also supported by the Higher Education Association’s Sustainability Consortium.
Information Tables for several area green businesses and environmental organizations, including Eagle Mountain and Regional Computer Recycling & Recovery will have informational tables set up in the second floor hallway in front of the Student Life Office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Presentations will take place between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in room B-440. The following speakers will present:
Frances Pesavento, Director of Programs and Development at Foodlink, will speak at 11 a.m. Her program, “Social Justice and Community Sustainability,” will discuss the contributions and programs of Foodlink.
Walter Simpson, former Director of the Green Office of the University at Buffalo will speak at 12 p.m. His presentation “Meeting the Challenge of Climate Change: What Campuses Can Do” will focus on energy conservation and related issues.
Stephen Rees, General Manager of the Lento Restaurant in Rochester, will speak at 2:00p.m. His presentation, “Introduction to the Slow Food Movement,” will examine restaurant practices emphasizing sustainable and ecological approaches.
In addition our cafeteria, through the Carousel of Services, will be serving locally grown and locally produced foods for an all day “Harvest Festival.”

FLCC Makes Strong Showing at Woodsmen’s Competition in South Bristol
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2008) – Seventeen Teams from five colleges and universities across New York State competed in sixteen lumberjack events at the Cummings Nature Center this past Sunday. In the men’s division, Paul Smith’s College’s men’s fist and second teams placed first and second with 1483 points and 1222 points respectively. The Finger Lakes Community College men finished in third place with 1152 points ahead of teams from Syracuse Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY Cobleskill and the SUNY ESF Ranger School at Wanakena. The FLCC men’s second team placed eighth with 850 points. In the women’s division the Syracuse ESF women’s second team placed first with 1346 points; FLCC did not enter a women’s team. The SUNY Ranger School placed first in the Jack and Jill division with 1231 points; the FLCC Jack and Jill team finished a close 3rd with 1162 points.
Britney Funcius, Saugerties; Ashley Rooney, Clifton Springs; and Zack Mangus, Sodus of the FLCC Jack and Jill team placed first in the underhand chop. The FLCC J team, including Rebecca Collins, Beaver Dams; Dana Harenda, West Clarksville; and Cameron Gray, Great Valley took top honors in both the team bowsaw and packboard relay and second in the team pulp toss. Rooney placed second in the pole climb and the triathlon, Collins placed 2nd in the pulp toss for distance; Gray and Mangus placed 2nd in the fire building event. Harenda, Gray and Collins finished second in the wood splitting event.
For the FLCC men’s first team, Zack Scribner, Palmyra, finished a close second in the single buck sawing event. Rob Spry, Walworth; Scribner; and Randy Mason, Webster placed second in the underhand chop. Chris Mielewski, Webster, MA and Spry took second place in the standing block chop. Scribner and Mason placed second in the endurance cross cut event. The FLCC men’s first team including Dan Gladstone, Palmyra, placed second in the packboard race.
Jacob Kymel, Walworth placed 2nd in the tree climb. This was the highlight for the FLCC men’s second team that consisted of James Bucien, Interlaken; John Draves, Randolf; Shawn Smith, Beaver Dams; Jacob Powel, Newark; and Zack Puis, Lyons.
The Finger Lakes teams will travel to Paul Smith’s College for a competition Oct. 25 and again to Sir Sanford Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario for the nation’s largest collegiate meet on Nov. 1.
FLCC and Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council Team up with New York State Office of Homeland Security to Offer “Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings” Course
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College, Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council and the New York State Office of Homeland Security offer “Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings” (AWR-130) course for first responders.
This course will take place on Friday, October 17, 2008 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at FLCC’s Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney Street, Geneva.
“Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings” (AWR-130) provides basic instruction on response procedures for terrorist incidents involving energetic materials (explosives and incendiaries). The course includes classroom presentations that address potential terrorist bombing targets in US communities, common military and commercial explosives available to terrorists, improvised explosive devices and response procedures that support safe and effective operations during bombing incidents.
Students who complete the course will be able to prepare emergency responders and others who are involved in incident response to perform safely and effectively during incidents of terrorism involving energetic materials. They will also gain a better respect for the destructive potential of energetic materials that may be used by terrorists in a WMD incident.

FLCC and Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council Team up with New York State Office of Homeland Security to Offer “WMD Radiological/Nuclear Awareness” Course
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College, Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council and the New York State Office of Homeland Security offer “WMD Radiological/Nuclear Awareness” (AWR – 140) course for first responders.
This course will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FLCC’s Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney Street, Geneva.
“WMD Radiological/Nuclear Awareness” is a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) radiological/nuclear overview designed for first responders and other personnel who are likely to be the first to arrive on the scene of a radiological/nuclear incident. It focuses on the basics of radiation, possible health effects, hazard identification and proper notification procedures.
Students who complete the course will be able to define fundamentals of radiation, radioactive material, ionization and contamination, describe indicators, signs and symptoms of exposure to radiation and recognize presence of radiological materials. They will also be able to appropriately communicate the need for additional resources during radiological incident and describe nuclear/radiological threat of terrorism and its potential impact on the community
