Ontario County Board of Supervisors Approves County Capital Improvement Plan
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (August 1, 2008) – A major Finger Lakes Community College building and renovation project was approved in concept by the Ontario County Board of Supervisors last night as part of the county’s overall Capital Improvement Plan 2009-2014.
“I am very pleased the board has decided to make this important investment in our county and in the future of Finger Lakes Community College,” said FLCC President Dr. Barbara Risser. “These projects will help FLCC serve our students and improve our standing as a dynamic regional learning resource, central to the cultural and economic vitality of the area.”
The project that was approved includes Phases I and II of the College’s Facilities Master Plan, which will encompass several initiatives to improve the infrastructure at the College in order to meet the steadily increasing demand, as well as the comprehensive needs of resident students. The project includes significant improvements to the learning environment such as the addition of 25 classrooms, allowing the college to replace trailers which currently house temporary classrooms, as well as necessary technology upgrades, expanded laboratory space, and a new student services building to facilitate a more efficient one-stop enrollment model. Also included in this plan is a multi-purpose auditorium for College and community events and expanded and improved dining services.
Another key focus of this plan is to improve and expand FLCC’s campus centers in order to offer a more robust course load from these locations, reducing the need for students in these areas to travel to the Canandaigua campus. FLCC is working with the communities of Geneva, Newark, and Victor in order to identify and meet community needs with appropriate degree and certificate program offerings. In Geneva, the focus will be on criminal justice, human services, business, and allied health. The new 28,000 square foot science and technology campus center planned for Victor will offer a variety of transfer programs, while also partnering with technology-based companies in the area to meet their workforce development needs.
“The improvements to the main campus and campus centers will strengthen our infrastructure and provide a solid foundation to support increasing enrollments and expand our market reach, making an FLCC education even more accessible,” said Carol Urbaitis, FLCC vice president of enrollment management.
“The expansion project will equip FLCC to provide a more able workforce for local businesses, and keep young people living and working in Ontario County,” stated Risser. “Our goal is to give even more students greater access to higher education and the benefits that come with an FLCC degree.”
On average, FLCC grads earn $419,200 more than someone with a high school diploma. Approximately 80 percent of FLCC grads remain in the Ontario County area.
“FLCC and its students already account for 2.3 percent of the area’s annual income, and that number is expected to increase with this expansion project,” Risser added.
