FLCC Receives Approval for its First-Ever All-Online Degree Program
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (July 29, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College’s first-ever online electronic commerce degree program recently received approval from the Middle States Association Accrediting Commission on Higher Education.
Students enrolling in this new associate of applied science degree program will be the first in the history of FLCC to have the option to complete their degree completely online or as a combination of online and traditional face-to-face courses. Online courses will be offered through the award-winning SUNY Learning Network (SLN). FLCC will also provide all administrative services online with no need to visit campus.
“Now that we have completed this final step in the approval process, we are anxious to begin accepting enrollments for this program,” states Dr. Barbara G. Risser, president of FLCC. “The choice of completing their degree online or on campus puts students in control of how they access higher education, providing the scheduling flexibility students increasingly need.”
Graduates of the associate in applied science electronic commerce degree program can expect to find careers in the fields of Internet marketing, Web advertising, Web application development, e-commerce sales, e-commerce consulting, and e-commerce Web administration.
Program courses will include the following: Introduction to Programming and Computing, Core Excel, MS Access and Database Processing, Visual Basic, Multimedia Development, Web Site Development and Programming and Principles of Information Security. Students will also be required to complete an internship in the field of business or computing science. Students will fulfill this internship in their local area with online facilitation by their FLCC instructor.
Currently, FLCC offers associate in science degrees in computer science and information systems and an associate in applied science degree in information technology. In addition, the College offers certificates in applied computer applications and information security.

FLCC Announces More Extensive Offerings for American Sign Language
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (July 24, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College students will now be able to declare an area of special interest in American Sign Language (ASL) within the associate in arts liberal arts and sciences degree program.
A survey conducted in November 2007 by the Modern Language Association (MLA) found that ASL has grown to be the “fourth most studied language on college campuses.” FLCC is responding to this demand by enhancing its ASL offerings in order to allow students to specialize in ASL as an area of special interest.
“There has been significant interest in expanding ASL offerings at FLCC from current students who are studying to be teachers and nurses, as well as physical education students,” stated Delia Ackermann Darnall, adjunct instructor of ASL for FLCC. “These students are anxious to be able to communicate better with the deaf in their day-to-day work and this coursework will assist them in reaching their goals.”
Graduates of this program will be qualified for employment as signing skills coaches for BOCES or ARC. Also, graduates can transfer to interpreter training programs at four-year institutions.
Students enrolled in the ASL area of special interest will take courses including ASL I - IV, and Deaf Culture and Community. The ASL courses meet modern language requirements at many four year colleges and universities.
For more information about the ASL area of special interest contact the FLCC Office of Admissions at admissions@flcc.edu or at (585) 394-FLCC, ext. 7278.
