FLCC to Offer New Degree Program in Paramedicine
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (June 27, 2008) – This morning, the Finger Lakes Community College Board of Trustees approved a new associate in applied science degree program in paramedicine. The program proposal must be approved by the State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Department of Education before students will be eligible to enroll. The College anticipates accepting applications for this new program in the fall 2009 semester.
The associate in applied science degree in paramedicine will prepare students to serve as pre-hospital emergency medical care professionals, as entry level paramedics. Students will understand the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) setting, applying the basic concepts of development, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to assessment and management of emergency patients, to be able to properly administer medications and communicate effectively with patients, as well as to prepare students to be able to safely manage the scene of an emergency.
This program is designed to augment the current emergency medical technician-paramedic certificate program. Students may pursue the certificate prior to the degree or they may pursue the degree and certificate simultaneously as some of the certificate courses will serve as prerequisites for the degree program.
“Augmenting our current certificate program to create a full degree program affords our students a well-rounded liberal arts education in addition to the hands-on paramedic training they will acquire.” said Dr. Barbara G. Risser, president of FLCC. “Even greater opportunities will be available for our graduates who hold a degree in addition to certification, such as the opportunity to pursue supervisory and administrative positions in the EMS field.”
The paramedicine degree program’s courses are designed around curriculum issued by the New York State Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Courses include EMS Management, Introduction to Paramedicine, Paramedic Airway and Patient Management, Paramedic-Cardiology, Paramedic-Medical Emergencies, Paramedic-Trauma, and Emergency Medical Technician with Defibrillation, as well as humanities, social science, math, and physical education requirements.
Courses will be offered at the Canandaigua campus, as well as the Geneva Campus Center.
To join the mailing list to receive information about the paramedicine degree once the program has received final approval, visit www.flcc.edu/newprograms or contact the FLCC Office of Admissions at (585) 394-FLCC, ext. 7278 or admissions@flcc.edu.

FLCC Board meeting held in newly named “Dr. Collins W. ‘Connie’ Carpenter Board room”
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (June 3, 2008) – The Finger Lakes Community College Board of Trustees met this morning for the first time since the naming of the College’s Board Room. The recently renovated Board Room was named the Dr. Collins W. “Connie” Carpenter Board Room as the culmination of the College’s 40th anniversary celebration at the Commencement Ceremony on May 17, 2008. The announcement of the naming of the Board Room was given by Professor of Environmental Conservation and Horticulture, Marty Dodge, who has been a member of the CCFL/FLCC faculty since 1972. In his speech, Dodge commented, “Although it was 30 years ago that Connie left the Board, he has never left the College. He continues to believe in the importance of FLCC in transforming student lives, he attends FLCC Commencement ceremonies, and he and his wife of over 60 years, Verna, are present at nearly every college reception and event.”
FLCC President Dr. Barbara Risser said, “Dr. Carpenter was truly instrumental in the creation of this College. The plaque above the doorway of the Dr. Collins W. ‘Connie’ Carpenter Board Room reminds us of the College’s past, the obstacles overcome, and the rich history of this institution, and it will serve to empower us to move forward and accomplish the significant goals ahead. This plaque, along with the student photos on the walls of the Board Room, reminds us all why we are here – for the students and for our community.”
Dr. Carpenter served as the first FLCC Board of Trustees Chairperson from 1967 to 1978, during a particularly eventful period for community colleges. These early years of the College’s history coincided with the inception of community colleges in New York state. Dr. Carpenter was an active Board Member during these important, early years of the College’s history.
“It is both humbling and inspiring to lead the Board of Trustees meetings in the Dr. Collins W. ‘Connie’ Carpenter Board Room,” said Anne Galbraith, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Dr. Carpenter’s contributions to the College are significant, and naming the Board Room in his honor is a fitting tribute to the remarkable work he has done for this institution.”
Dr. Carpenter has continually fostered his relationship with FLCC throughout the years. Upon receiving the honor of the naming of the Board Room at the Commencement Ceremony, Dr. Carpenter stated, “I assure you that my association with the College has given more to me than I have given to it.” Dr. Carpenter remains a champion of Finger Lakes Community College and its students and graduates.
