FLCC Professor Honored with Prestigious Sustainability Award

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 22, 2008) – Dr. Bruce Gilman, professor of environmental conservation and horticulture at Finger Lakes Community College, was honored earlier this month with the prestigious Lake Tear of the Clouds Award, the New York State Federation of Lake Associations’ (NYSFOLA) highest honor. The award is named after the highest lake in New York state and source of the Hudson River and is given only when appropriate to a person who has demonstrated the highest dedication to lakes and watersheds.

Gilman began teaching at FLCC in 1976 and, for the past 28 years, has been conducting research on many regional bodies of water, including Honeoye Lake, as well as Canandaigua Lake and its watershed. He is well-known for his dedication to preservation of water quality throughout the region and the state.

Gilman received the Lake Tear of the Clouds Award at NYSFOLA’s 25th annual conference, held on the first weekend of May at the White Eagle Conference Center in Hamilton, N.Y. Past winners of the Lake Tear of the Clouds Award include former New York State Governor George Pataki (1996), former Congressman Sherwood Boehlert (1998), and Congressman Jim Walsh (2003).

Gilman teaches numerous conservation courses and serves as the curator of FLCC’s 12,000-specimen herbarium. He is an avid hiker and has completed all 46 Adirondack high peaks, and he shares this passion with students on college sponsored travel ecology courses. Gilman serves on several environmental boards including the Central and Western New York Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, the Honeoye Lake Watershed Taskforce, the Ontario County Water Resources Council, and the New York Flora Association. He was co-founder of the Thousand Acre Swamp Preserve Committee (Penfield) and served as preserve monitor at Hoskins Woods (Phelps) and Bentley Woods (Fishers). In past years, Gilman has received the “Friend of the Land Award” from the Central and Western New York Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and the “Friend of the Lake Award” from Canandaigua Lake Pure Waters.

GO GREEN AT FINGER LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE:
Finger Lakes Community College has a long tradition of dedication to preserving our environment through its environmental conservation programs. In March 2008, the College began building upon this tradition by launching an extensive “Go Green” initiative. FLCC has joined hundreds of higher education institutions in signing the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, pledging to strive to eliminate global warming emissions and to integrate sustainability into their curriculum and operations. Likewise, FLCC students are signing Sustainability Pledges to learn more about how they can meet the needs of today without compromising the needs of future generations. FLCC has already implemented a number of green practices, including using locally grown foods in its cafeteria and installing more efficient lighting.
