FLCC Welcomes New President at Community Celebration: May 3 inauguration of Dr. Barbara G. Risser will showcase diverse talents of students and faculty
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 24, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) is planning its first Presidential Inauguration in 15 years and is inviting the public to join the celebration. Dr. Barbara G. Risser was appointed as FLCC’s fourth president on June 22, 2007. The College will host the customary inauguration celebration on Saturday, May 3 at the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) on the FLCC Canandaigua campus at 2 p.m., followed by a reception.
FLCC invites the residents of the Finger Lakes and Rochester communities – and beyond – to CMAC for the inauguration ceremony and reception. The public celebration will feature the diverse talents of FLCC’s students and faculty highlighted by the public debut of the college’s first-ever alma mater. FLCC will also unveil the student and faculty winners of a juried poetry competition, and a new video production honoring the uniqueness of the FLCC experience.
“We are proud to invite the public to join us in welcoming President Risser with a vibrant ceremony that will honor the inaugural traditions, while also displaying the energy, excitement and talents of FLCC’s students and faculty.” said Dean Carol Urbaitis, co-chair of the inauguration committee.
The newly penned alma mater was created by two FLCC professors. Elaine Lomber, retired professor of English wrote the lyrics and Dr. David R. McGuire, assistant professor of music, arranged the musical score. Lomber and McGuire have collaborated to create an alma mater that celebrates the tradition and excellence of FLCC. The FLCC College Singers will perform the alma mater for its public debut at the end of the inauguration ceremony.
Also featured during the ceremony will be the reading of two winning poems from the College’s juried poetry competition. FLCC students and staff were invited to participate in this competition. After an outstanding response, the selection committee chose one student and one faculty member who will read their winning poems at the ceremony.
As part of the ceremony, President Risser will be presented with her presidential medallion. This medallion was commissioned by the College to be hand cast in bronze by Barron R. Naegel, FLCC instructor of art. This medallion commemorates the 40th anniversary of the College, as well as the inauguration of President Risser. The central image is that of an oak tree – a consistent symbol of strength, stability, and knowledge and a fitting reminder of the College’s mission and direction for the future.
“The entire FLCC community has come together, with great enthusiasm, in preparing this celebration for President Risser. This is an exciting time in the history of the College and reason to take a moment to celebrate,” said Development Officer Amy Pauley, co-chair of the inauguration committee.
