FLCC Invites the Public to Attend Walleye Weekend

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 31, 2008) – The Finger Lakes Community College Department of Environmental Conservation and Horticulture hosts Walleye Weekend on Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Muller Field Station near Honeoye Lake, 6455 County Road 36, Honeoye. This event is free and open to the public.

At Walleye Weekend, visitors will be able to see, first-hand, the fish culturing operations of FLCC’s Fish Culture and Aquatic Research Center located at the Muller Field Station. This operation focuses on the collection, spawning, raising and stocking of walleye. There will be opportunities to see the large walleye that come out of the lake and to speak with FLCC faculty, staff, and students to learn how the walleye eggs are harvested and cultivated before being reintroduced to the lake environment.

“This event provides an opportunity for people to experience something unique,” states John VanNiel, professor of conservation. “Our students, working alongside faculty, will demonstrate the fish culturing operation at Muller. It’s not something you see every day.”

The event will also include displays from other areas of FLCC’s Environmental Conservation programs, including black bear research and Honeoye Lake aquaculture research, as well as a live herpetology display, including frogs, toads, and salamanders, among others.

For additional information, contact John VanNiel at 585-394-FLCC, ext. 7254 or vanniejj@flcc.edu.

FLCC Professor to Discuss Super Bugs

Public Event to Educate Community about Drug Resistant Bacteria and How to Combat Dangers
A class of bacteria known as “Super Bugs” is becoming increasingly prevalent and problematic. These bacteria are resistant to antibiotics and present a serious health challenge to affected individuals.

FLCC Assistant Professor Dr. Kelli Prior will present a primer on these bacteria. The community forum, which is open to the public, will be held on the Finger Lakes Community College Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr., this Thursday, March 27 from 12:30 – 1:50 p.m. in room D-214.

Dr. Prior will discuss in detail MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). MRSA has received the most media attention, as this staph infection affects many while in the hospital.

“In our collective obsession with remaining healthy, many people are overusing antibiotics,” said Dr. Prior. “By using antibiotics when they are not needed, for example to treat a common cold, we are allowing the bacteria to build up a resistance to these drugs. Using antibiotics when they’re not needed only kills the weakest bacteria, leaving stronger, more robust bacteria in the body to reproduce. The next generation of bacteria is stronger and more resistant to antibiotics than the last. This process is repeated and ultimately produces bacteria that are quite difficult to eradicate, requiring much stronger antibiotics,” added Prior.

Before opening the discussion for questions from the community, Dr. Prior will address specifically what MRSA is, how it causes infection, why it has been in the news, where it came from and preventative measures.
