FLCC Presents “Wayne Williams: A Retrospective”
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 29, 2008) – The Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College presents, “Wayne Williams: A Retrospective” from March 13 – April 18, 2008. The exhibit will include a retrospective of drawings and sculpture by Wayne Williams, FLCC professor emeritus.
Located on the first floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, the gallery will hold an informal discussion with the artist on Thursday, March 13 from 1-2 p.m. A formal reception is scheduled for March 14 from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery. The reception is sponsored by the FLCC Foundation. All events are free and open to the public.
From 1958 to 1968, Williams worked as a professional sculptor. In 1968 he was hired as FLCC’s first fine arts instructor, overseeing the development of the College’s art program. Williams also served as art gallery coordinator and department chair. Williams’ professional work has included several commissions, including the life-size statue of William Simon at the University of Rochester’s Simon School and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial “soldier” at Highland Park in Rochester. Williams also recently completed a bronze sculpture “cougar” for North Rose-Wolcott School.
Williams received both his bachelor’s and master’s of fine arts degrees from Syracuse University. While at Syracuse he was the recipient of a summer art scholarship to the Skowegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. He also received the Louis Comfort Tiffany award for creative research. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Williams was the recipient of a John Armstrong Chaloner Fellowship for study and travel abroad. He studied and exhibited in Belgium, including the Belgian Salon Des Beaux Arts in Ghent. His work is also in the collection of the Belgian Government Office of Flemish Culture.
In 2003, Williams retired from FLCC as professor emeritus and continues to work as an artist, represented by the Oxford Gallery in Rochester. He continues his love of teaching at the Wayne County Council for the Arts in Newark, where he lives. Following his retirement, the FLCC art gallery was renamed in honor of Williams and Professor Emeritus Thomas Insalaco.

FLCC Receives Donation of Bobcat Equipment Use from D.J.M. Equipment
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 29, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College has received a donation of one-month classroom usage of a Bobcat skid-steer loader from D.J.M. Equipment/ Bobcat of the Finger Lakes, 7216 Palmyra Rd., Fairport. The machine has been delivered to FLCC’s Canandaigua Campus and is being used by students in the Landscape Construction and Maintenance course (HRT 202) this spring.
Students in this course will complete Bobcat safety training and will learn to operate and drive the machine. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be certified in Bobcat safety.
“This is the first time this type of training has been offered as part of this course,” stated Rochelle Smith, instructor of ornamental horticulture for FLCC. “We are grateful to D.J.M. Equipment/ Bobcat of the Finger Lakes for making this hands-on learning experience a reality. Our students will walk away from this course with very practical and highly marketable skills.”
FLCC’s Landscape Construction and Maintenance course is designed to provide hands-on experience in the installation and maintenance of landscape materials, including the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, lawns, and herbaceous plants, as well as hardscapes, waterscapes, and irrigation systems. An introduction to selection, operation, and maintenance of landscape tools and equipment is also provided. FLCC Offers Credit Courses in Eight Week “Minimesters”
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College offers full-semester credit courses in eight-week “minimesters.” The Spring Minimester II runs from March 24-May 16, 2008. Courses are offered at the Canandaigua campus, the Geneva Campus Center, and the Wayne County Campus Center. Classes are held during the day, in the evening, on Saturdays, and online.
These time-condensed courses offer the same academic quality and total instructional time of the College’s traditional classes but can be completed in the shortened eight-week minimester format. Students can take classes in a variety of subjects such as computer science, English, math, physical education, psychology, and science.

FLCC’s Global Awareness Series Presents The Dady Brothers
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2008) — Finger Lakes Community College, through the Global Awareness Series, presents The Dady Brothers, Monday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in Stage 13 on the second floor of the Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive.
The Dady Brothers are a widely acclaimed folk duo that have performed their special brand of Irish music throughout the U.S., Canada, and Ireland. They use a variety of instruments including fiddle, mandolin, guitar, penny whistle, bodhran, harmonica, banjo, and uillean pipes. A sampling of Irish foods will be available. This program is free and open to the public.
FLCC’s Global Awareness Program is designed to raise awareness about global issues and to allow participants to experience cultural diversity that exists both globally and locally. Global Awareness Film Series, 7:30 p.m. in room D-214 on the Canandaigua Campus. The documentary being shown, “The Corporation,” has won 26 international awards. The film traces the rise of corporations to a globally dominant position, explores the effects of the logic of corporate structure, and examines the possibility of reforming the corporate system to solve current issues.

Join us and learn what MRSA is, how it causes infection, why it’s been in the news, and where it came from.

FLCC Presents a Reading By Author Ben Sherwood - CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College, in partnership with Canandaigua Reads!, brings author Ben Sherwood to campus for a book reading and discussion on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. at FLCC’s Charles J. Meder Library on the Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. Sherwood will read excerpts from his book, “The Death & Life of Charlie St. Cloud,” the 2008 Canandaigua Reads! selection.
Ben Sherwood is also the author of “The Man Who Ate the 747,” a national best-selling novel that was translated into 13 languages and is being adapted both as a major motion picture and a musical. An Emmy award-winning journalist, Sherwood has worked for NBC and ABC News, and his writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. Educated at Harvard and Oxford, he is currently at work on a third book of fiction.

FLCC Board of Trustees Elects Officers for 2008
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2008) – The Board of Trustees at Finger Lakes Community College recently held its election of officers for the year 2008. Elected were: Anne Galbraith of Canandaigua, chair; Robert Griswold of Phelps, vice chair; and Jeffrey A. Friend of Canandaigua, secretary.
“As officers and members of the Board, Ms. Galbraith, Mr. Griswold, and Mr. Friend have demonstrated their commitment to students and their dedication to high quality education in a supportive environment, for which FLCC is well known,” states Dr. Barbara G. Risser, president of FLCC. “Their leadership and stewardship of the financial resources of the College serve the residents of Ontario County and the Finger Lakes region very well.”
Galbraith, a member of the Board since 2000, served as secretary in 2004 and 2005, and vice-chair in 2006 and 2007. She presently serves as Trustee liaison to the FLCC Alumni Association.
She is currently an attorney specializing in family law, in particular the representation of children. She opened her own practice in Canandaigua in 1991. In 2001, Galbraith received the Hon. Michael F. Dillon Award for Outstanding Representation of Children in the Seventh Judicial District. Previously, she was vice president and senior attorney for Chase Lincoln First Bank. She also held several positions at Lincoln First Bank, including assistant vice president, assistant counsel, and staff attorney.
Galbraith received her juris doctor degree from Syracuse University College of Law and her bachelor’s degree from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She is a member of the Ontario County and Yates County Bar Associations. She is a past president of the Ontario County Bar Association, and previously served in other positions in that Association. Galbraith is past chairperson of the South Bristol Zoning Board of Appeals. She has volunteered extensively in the Canandaigua schools and at her church.
Griswold is currently chairman of Ontario Telephone Company, Inc. and the Trumansburg Telephone Company. He has been a member of the FLCC Board of Trustees since 1999, serving as secretary in 2002 and 2003, vice chair in 2004 and 2005, and chair in 2006 and 2007. He also serves as a member of the Board of the Ontario County Industrial Development Agency.
A few of his past activities include: chairman of the Board of the Ontario County Industrial Development Agency, chairman and board member of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the Rochester area; chairman and board member of Finger Lakes Long Term Care Insurance Company; chairman and board member of the New York State Telecommunications Association, Inc.; member of the Board of Directors of the Deposit Telephone Company, Inc.; president of the Empire Chapter Independent Telephone Pioneers; member of the Regional Advisory Board of Fleet Bank; member of the Finger Lakes Community College Foundation Board of Directors; trustee of the Village of Clifton Springs; and president of Clifton Springs YMCA.
Griswold is a graduate of Clifton Springs Central School and received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force Reserve with the rank of captain.
Friend has been a member of the FLCC Board of Trustees since 2003. He presently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors for the FLCC Foundation.
Friend is currently Vice President of Lyons National Bank in Geneva where he has been employed since 2003. Friend is a campaign cabinet member for the Geneva Boys and Girls Club, serves on the advisory board for the Ontario County Juvenile Drug Court, is a volunteer lacrosse coach for the Canandaigua City School District, and is a board member of the United Way of Ontario County and the Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua.
Friend received his bachelor’s degree in management science/economics from the State University of New York at Geneseo. Friend is past treasurer and board member for the Greater Canandaigua Civic Center, Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce, and Canandaigua YMCA. He also served on the Rushville Health Center Board and the Cornell Cooperative Advisory Board.
Other FLCC Board of Trustee members include William A. Bigham and Dr. Karen Davison Blazey of Canandaigua; Harry G. Burt of Geneva; Gen. Charles P. McCausland of Hall; John T. Hicks of Seneca Castle; and Donald I. Wickham of Victor.
FLCC Holds Science and Technology Colloquium on Airfoils and Wind Energy
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College’s Department of Science and Technology will host a Colloquium with alumnus, Keegan O’Donnell (’04), mechanical engineer in the Steam Turbine Division of General Electric in Schenectady, NY. The Colloquium will take place on Feb. 28 from 12:45-1:50 p.m. in room D-214 on FLCC’s Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr.
O’Donnell’s presentation, “Active Control of Airfoils with Application to Wind Energy,” will discuss his research in active aeroelastic control of airfoils using synthetic jet actuators to virtually “shape” airfoils for optimized purpose, improved efficiency, and reduced fatigue.
O’Donnell graduated from Bloomfield High School in 2002, and received an associate’s degree in engineering science from FLCC in 2004. He transferred to Clarkson University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and a master’s degree in mechanical/aeronautical engineering.
The purpose of FLCC’s Science and Technology Colloquium is to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of careers in science, technology, and engineering, while providing opportunities to make connections beyond the classroom. FLCC Presents a Belated Mardi Gras Night
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College, through the Global Awareness Series, presents “An Evening with the All Night Ramblers Cajun Band” on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in Stage 13 on the second floor of the Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. This program, a belated Mardi Gras, will also feature a tasting of authentic gumbo and red beans with rice.
The All Night Ramblers play deep rooted Cajun dance hall music. This dynamic band features Bill Henrie (fiddle/vocals), Russ Roberts (Cajun accordion), Betsy Fuller (guitar/vocals), Joe Haberstro (triangle), and Adam Snit (acoustic bass). The Ramblers bring old-style Cajun music to life, infusing their tunes with energy, passion and spirit straight out of Southwest Louisiana.
