FLCC Offers Online GED Preparation
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 29, 2008) — Finger Lakes Community College is offering a free online course to prepare adults age 17 or older for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) exam. Registration for this online course is ongoing. However, space is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
In order to enroll, a required 3.5 hour in-person orientation must be completed. Orientations are scheduled individually and can be completed at FLCC’s Canandaigua campus, the Geneva Campus Center, or the Wayne County Campus Center in Newark. Students must meet specific criteria to be accepted into the online program. The orientation includes required testing to determine student eligibility.
Once enrolled, students will be assigned an FLCC instructor who will provide a password for access to the online program. Students will proceed through the course at their own rate and the FLCC instructor will monitor the students’ online progress, provide additional supplemental instruction as needed, and telephone the students each week.

FLCC Offers “Wildland Fire Chain Saws” Course
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (January 25, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College’s environmental conservation and horticulture department will offer “WFS 212: Wildland Fire Chain Saws” course in February. This course will be held over two weekends: Feb. 16/17 and Feb. 23/24 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in room C-231 on FLCC’s Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr.
The Wildland Fire Chain Saws course meets federal guidelines for S212 certification. Students of this class will be instructed on function, maintenance, and use of powered chain saws and their tactical wildland fire application. Field exercises will emphasize safety, proper cutting techniques, field maintenance, and use of a saw in surroundings similar to fireline situations.
To enroll in this course, students must have completed S130/190 certification for Firefighter Type 2. This course is appropriate for students with little or no previous experience operating a chain saw and no previous field experience is necessary.

FLCC Celebrates 40th Anniversary with a Semester of Events
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College will celebrate its 40th anniversary throughout the spring 2008 semester. The celebration will begin with a ceremonial cake-cutting on Feb. 5 at 12:45 p.m. Cakes will be simultaneously cut at the three campus locations: the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr., in the FLCC library foyer entrance; the Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney St.; and the Wayne County Campus Center, 1100 Technology Pkwy., Newark.
“The 2008 spring semester marks 40 years since the arrival of 221 students at the Community College of the Finger Lakes in 1967,” states Dr. Barbara G. Risser, FLCC president. “Throughout this semester we will celebrate the College’s growth, prosperity, and continued commitment to excellence in higher education since those storefront days.”
February’s schedule of 40th anniversary events includes:
Feb. 6 – Open Mic Night, 7 p.m. Enjoy student and alumni performers in Stage 13 on the Canandaigua Campus. Performers should arrive early to reserve a place on the list.
Feb. 7 – Art Gallery Opening Reception, 5-7 p.m. View local artist and alumna Andrea Petitto’s work at the Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 on the Canandaigua Campus.
Feb. 8 – American Red Cross Blood Drive, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Schedule a time to donate at Stage 13 on the Canandaigua Campus by calling 585-394-FLCC, 7262.
Feb. 15 and 29 – Jazz Jam Nights, 6 p.m. Gather with FLCC music students and alumni in Stage 13 and enjoy jazz-style music.
Feb. 22 – Honors Studies Alumni Gallery Opening, 7-10 p.m. View alumni artwork and enjoy alumni/student music at the Honors House, 4340 Lakeshore Dr., Canandaigua.

FLCC Announces Fall 2007 Dean’s List
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (January 24, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College’s Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Dr. Thomas E. Topping recently announced the FLCC dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester. More than 400 students received this honor.
To be eligible for the FLCC fall semester dean’s list students must attend full time, be matriculated, earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and complete 12 or more credit hours successfully.
FLCC Wayne County Campus Center Increases Course Offerings
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2008) — Finger Lakes Community College’s Wayne County Campus Center in Newark experienced a 5% increase in enrollment for the fall 2007 semester. In response to this growing demand, the campus center has added eight new courses for the spring 2008 (Jan. 28 – May 16) semester, as well as two new Saturday offerings.

FLCC Offers “Tree Culture and Maintenance” Course in Geneva
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (January 15, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College’s “Tree Culture and Maintenance” course will be offered at the Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney St. The course will be held on Monday evenings from 6 – 8:50 p.m. during the spring 2008 semester, which runs from Jan. 28 to May 16.
This course will provide future arborists and homeowners alike with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully select, plant, and care for trees in an urban environment. This course addresses the underlying biology of secondary plant growth and teaches correct pruning and shaping techniques to enhance future growth of young trees. Students will also learn how to identify trees and select tree species appropriate for the planting site, how to prepare the planting bed for optimum plant health, and how to diagnose common tree disorders.
This course will also be offered on Tuesday afternoons from 2 – 4:50 p.m. at FLCC’s Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr.

Finger Lakes Chorale Seeks Singers for May Concerts
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2008) — The Finger Lakes Chorale of Finger Lakes Community College, under the direction of Dennis Maxfield, is seeking new members for two performances of Franz Joseph Haydn’s “The Creation,” on May 3 and 4.
Beginning January 29, rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in Room B-355 at FLCC’s Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. Auditions are not required; however, prior choral singing experience is necessary. A $5 non-credit registration fee is payable at the first rehearsal.
Participants have the option of earning one college credit as a member of the Chorale by enrolling in, paying tuition costs for, and completing requirements for the course MUS 120 Finger Lakes Chorale.

FLCC and TV Course Offer ESL Instruction
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2008) — Finger Lakes Community College is offering guidance and educational tools to supplement a nationally televised instruction program for speakers of other languages who want to improve their English language skills by studying at home.
The weekly half-hour comedy/drama entitled “Crossroads Café” will air on FLTV channel 12 at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 30. Each episode will be repeated on Sundays at 12:30 p.m. The program will also air on WXXI Channel 21 in Rochester and on WCNY Channel 24 in Syracuse. Consult your local television listings or contact the television station for more information.
The 26-part series follows the lives of six characters of various ethnic backgrounds. In addition to learning English from the “Café” characters, viewers will gain insight into other aspects of U.S. culture, such as seeking citizenship and finding jobs.
Audiences will learn to speak, read, and write English by watching the program, completing workbook assignments, and contacting their FLCC tutor each week. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.

Beginning Jan. 28, “GED Connection” will air on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. on FLTV Channel 12, with repeat broadcasts on Saturdays from l to 2 p.m.
Lessons will also air on WXXI Channel 21 in Rochester and WCNY Channel 24 in Syracuse. Consult your local television listings or contact the television station for more information.
Through the telecourse, students will be able to view the lessons, complete workbook assignments, and speak with an FLCC tutor each week. The program covers the five major subject areas on the exam: writing, reading, social studies, science, and mathematics. Lessons focus on the workplace and demonstrate practical applications of the skills and knowledge learned for the GED exam. Assigned tutors will be available for assistance in all subject areas. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.

FLCC Offers “A+ Hardware/Operating Systems Technologies” Course at Geneva Campus Center
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (January 3, 2008) – For the first time, Finger Lakes Community College’s “A+ Hardware/Operating Systems Technologies” course will be offered at the Geneva Campus Center. The course will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4:30 – 6:20 p.m. during the spring 2008 semester, which runs from Jan. 29 to May 16.
This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to computer hardware and software for people interested in gaining the fundamental knowledge and skills required to build, install, configure, upgrade, manage, troubleshoot, and repair personal computers.
The objectives of the “A+ Hardware/Operating Systems Technologies” course align closely with CompTIA’s A+ Certification objectives. However, the primary focus is to provide participants with the basic working knowledge of a computer system. Prior knowledge of computer systems is helpful, but not required.
