FLCC Presents “A Few of Our Own: The Biennial Alumni Exhibition”

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2007) – The Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College presents an exhibition of photography, painting, and sculpture entitled, “A Few of Our Own: The Biennial Alumni Exhibition,” with Jason Flack (’91), Melissa Newcomb (’02), and Thomas Safran (’96) from Dec. 13, 2007 – Jan. 25, 2008.

Located on the first floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, the Gallery will hold an informal discussion with the artists on Dec. 13 from 1-2 p.m. and a reception on Dec. 13 from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit and both events are free and open to the public.

Flack of Rochester, graduated from FLCC in 1992 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Brockport and a master of fine arts in photography from SUNY University at Buffalo. Flack has shown his work at the Mercer Gallery at Monroe Community College (MCC) and the Rundell library in Rochester, as well as at the Capen and Anderson galleries at SUNY University at Buffalo. Nationally, Flack has exhibited his work at the University of New Mexico and the Commonwealth University of Virginia, as well as in a traveling graduate exhibition in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Houston. Flack is presently an adjunct instructor of photography at MCC.

Newcomb of Canandaigua, graduated from FLCC in 2002 with an associate in science degree in fine arts, after which she completed her bachelor of fine arts and master of arts at SUNY Oswego. Newcomb also earned a master of fine arts in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Newcomb’s work has been exhibited at the Bevier Gallery at RIT, Joy Gallery and Gallery r in Rochester, and the Tyler Art Gallery at Oswego. She has received several awards for her art, including the Aulus Saunders Service Award, the Grant Arnold Award, the Al Brenner Painting Award and a Merit Scholarship. Newcomb currently teaches photography as an adjunct instructor at FLCC.

Safran of Avon, graduated from FLCC in 1996 with an associate in arts degree in liberal arts and sciences. He went on to earn a bachelor of arts in sculpture from Buffalo State College and a master of fine arts in sculpture from the University of North Dakota. Safran also holds a master’s in art education from RIT. While in North Dakota, Safran exhibited at the Northern Lights gallery, the Empire Art gallery, Burtness Theatre Art gallery and the North Dakota Museum of Art. Locally, Safran’s work has been shown at Gallery r in Rochester and the Wayne Arts Community Arts Center in Newark. Safran has also completed commissioned work, a bronze relief in Grand Forks, N.D., and a bronze fountain centerpiece in Livonia, N.Y.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The College will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1, 2008 in observance of the holidays. FLCC Employee Receives Harriet C. Weber EMS Leadership Award
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2007) – Donna M. Spink of Hall, coordinator of emergency medical services (EMS) for Finger Lakes Community College, received the 2007 Harriet C. Weber EMS Leadership Award at the New York State EMS Council’s annual Vital Sign’s Conference recently held in Syracuse, New York. This award recognizes longevity, innovation and dedication in establishing, maintaining and expanding EMS organizations.

Spink has served as FLCC’s coordinator of EMS since 1995 and has been instrumental in developing, implementing, and growing the EMS program. Spink’s service to the community includes participation in the Stanley-Hall-Gorham Volunteer Ambulance squad, the Hall Fire Company, the Ontario County Ambulance and Rescue Association, Ontario County Advance Life Support, Inc., and the Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council.

Spink was nominated for this award by the Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council and Dennis “Putt” Moore, chairperson, department of physical education and integrated health care for FLCC. “Donna has gone above and beyond with the College and the Council to provide exceptional educational opportunities for the EMS community, as well as the general public,” states Moore. “She has been instrumental in providing EMS education and knowledge to local providers, while also building public awareness of EMS across the region and the state.”

Spink is a certified instructor by the New York State Department of Health Bureau of EMS and is a member of the National Association of EMS Educators. Spink holds a master’s degree in management from Keuka College, a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from SUNY Empire State College, as well as an associate’s degree in accounting and an EMT-Paramedic certificate both from FLCC.

FLCC Announces Jan Plan Registration

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2007) – Registration for the three-week Finger Lakes Community College Jan Plan session is now underway, continuing through December 28.

The session runs from January 2 through January 18, allowing students to complete college credit courses in three weeks. Students can take classes in a variety of subjects such as computer science, English, nursing, conservation, psychology, sociology, and others. A complete listing of Jan Plan course offerings can be viewed at http://webadvisor.flcc.edu. If you are not a current FLCC student, click on “guest access” to view the Jan Plan course listing in Web Advisor.

To enroll in a Jan Plan course, visit www.flcc.edu/register and select “Jan Plan 2008 Classes.” The registration form can be downloaded from this area of the Web site. Students may also register in person by visiting the Registrar’s Office Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Please note: the College is closed Nov. 21-25, Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31, and Jan. 1, 2008 for the holidays.)

FLCC to Offer Online Electronic Commerce Degree Program

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2007) – A new online electronic commerce degree program at Finger Lakes Community College recently received approval from the New York State Department of Education. The program proposal will also go to the Middle States Association Accrediting Commission on Higher Education for final approval as this will be the first fully-online degree program offered by FLCC.

FLCC will offer the e-commerce degree program through the award-winning SUNY Learning Network (SLN). Students in this program will complete coursework through online forums with instructors and fellow students. All courses and administrative services will be provided online with no need to visit campus.

“We are pleased to offer this new online e-commerce degree program as a strong complement to our existing computing sciences offerings,” states Dr. Barbara G. Risser, president of FLCC. “The flexible online learning format will open this program up to those who could not pursue this degree in a traditional setting. Also, the program’s interdisciplinary focus on both business and Web development will prepare graduates for career opportunities in this growing field.”

Graduates of the associate in applied science electronic commerce degree program can expect to find careers in the fields of Internet marketing, Web advertising, Web application development, e-commerce sales, e-commerce consulting, and e-commerce Web administration.

Program courses will include the following: Introduction to Programming and Computing, Core Excel, MS Access and Database Processing, Visual Basic, Multimedia Development, Web Site Development and Programming, and Principles of Information Security. Students will also be required to complete an internship in the field of business or computing science. This internship will be facilitated online and fulfilled in the student’s local area.

Currently, FLCC offers associate in science degrees in computer science and information systems and an associate in applied science degree in information technology. In addition, the College offers certificates in applied computer applications and information security.

FLCC Reaches Highest Enrollment Ever

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2007) – For the fall 2007 semester, Finger Lakes Community College reached its highest total enrollment ever in its 40-year history. A total of 5,351 students enrolled, which is an increase of 201 students, or 3.9 percent, over fall 2006 enrollment. Enrollment of full-time students increased by 7.7 percent to 2,852 which is also the highest full-time enrollment in the history of the College.

Sixty-seven percent of all full-time students and 20 percent of all part-time students have enrolled in the College’s associate in arts and associate in science transfer degree programs designed to prepare graduates to pursue four-year degrees.

More than eighty-two percent of all full-time enrollment comes from the five county region: Ontario (39 percent); Wayne (19 percent); Seneca (seven percent); Yates (six percent); and Monroe (11 percent).

Slightly over 23 percent of all credit course enrollment is produced at off-campus locations including the Geneva Campus Center and the Wayne County Campus Center.

Finger Lakes Community College enrolled its first class of 210 students in 1968. Today the College has grown considerably, offering more than 45 academic degree and certificate programs including music recording technology, nursing, environmental conservation, liberal arts, therapeutic massage and integrated health care, and graphic design, among others.

FLCC to Offer New Degree Program in Introduction to Game Programming and Design

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2007) – Last night the Finger Lakes Community College Board of Trustees approved a new associate in applied science degree program in introduction to game programming and design. The program proposal will also be sent for approval to the State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Department of Education. The College anticipates accepting applications for this program for the fall 2008 semester.

“This new degree program is the first to be offered by a community college in this region of New York state and will complement FLCC’s strong offerings in computing sciences,” said Dr. Barbara G. Risser, president of FLCC. “The College is committed to preparing students for technical career opportunities, and graduates of this new degree program will be prepared to gain entry-level employment in this competitive and growing field.”

Graduates of the associate in applied science degree in introduction to game programming and design can expect to find careers in the fields of game design, game programming, and game management, among others. According to The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the software publishing industry, of which game design and programming is a part, has doubled since 1990 and is expected to continue this growth, increasing by 68% between 2004 and 2014.

Students in this program will learn how to use the most recent technologies and tools for Web application development, and gain a high degree of hands-on experience with the design and development of game application software, while also learning the theory and fundamentals of game design and programming.

Computing sciences courses in this program will include Introduction to Programming and Computing, Data Structures I and II, Data Communications and Networking, Multimedia Development, Applied Database Concepts, Introduction to the Game Industry, Fundamentals of Game Design, and Introduction to 3D Computer Animation. Additionally, students in this program will complete a culminating Game Programming Team Capstone Project which will allow students to work on teams to develop a professional game project and prepare a professional programmer’s portfolio.

Currently, FLCC offers an associate in applied science degree in information technology; associate in science degrees in computer science and information systems; and certificates in applied computer applications and information security.

FLCC Adjunct Instructor Has Book of Poetry Published

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 8, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College Adjunct Instructor, Maureen Owens of Seneca Falls has had her first book of poetry, titled “She Sleeps with Dogs,” published by Foothills Publishing.

Owens has served as an adjunct instructor for FLCC since 2002. She holds a master of fine arts in creative writing from Antioch University Los Angeles, a bachelor’s degree in literature from SUNY Binghamton, and is a New York state licensed massage therapist.

Owens’ poetry has been anthologized in ImageArt, Knocking on the Silence, Common Intuitions, and will be included in the forthcoming anthology Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer’s Disease. She has been a featured reader at events in Syracuse, Rochester, Canandaigua, Seneca Falls, and Los Angeles. In February, Owens will be included as a featured poet at an event in New York City, “Courting Risk: A Multi-Genre/Multi-Cultural Women’s Reading.”

Owens will be a featured reader on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Parlor Room of the FLCC Honors House, 4340 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua. “She Sleeps with Dogs” is available for purchase at the FLCC bookstore.

FLCC Announces Holiday Hours

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 8, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College will be closed Nov. 21-25, Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31, and Jan. 1, 2008 in observance of the holidays.

The college will resume regular business hours Wednesday, January 02, 2008.

FLCC Announces Faculty and Staff Appointments

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 8, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College recently announced the following faculty and staff appointments:

Barbara Brenner of Lima has been appointed instructor of computing sciences. Brenner has served as an adjunct faculty member for FLCC since 2005. She holds a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Purdue University and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

John Foust of Stanley has been appointed temporary instructor of environmental conservation and horticulture. Foust has served as a conservation technician for the College since 1999. He holds a master’s degree in biological sciences from SUNY Brockport, a bachelor’s degree in fisheries from the State University College of Agriculture and Technology in Cobleskill, and an associate’s degree in natural resources conservation from FLCC.

William Langston of Penfield has been hired as instructor of mathematics. Langston has served as an adjunct faculty member for FLCC, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and St. John Fisher College since 1999. He has a master’s degree in applied statistics from the Rochester Institute of Technology; master’s degrees in operations research and statistics and chemical/environmental engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from St. Lawrence University.

Danielle Read of Avon joins FLCC as marketing communications specialist, part-time. Most recently, Read served as corporate communications writer for CareGuide. She has a bachelor’s degree in management science from SUNY Geneseo, an associate’s degree in business administration from Monroe Community College, and is currently pursuing a master’s in library science through SUNY University at Buffalo.

Douglas Short of Rochester has been hired as temporary instructor of biology. Short holds a master’s degree in toxicology from the University of Rochester and a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Washington. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in toxicology at the University of Rochester.

Rochelle Smith of Grand Island joins FLCC as instructor of ornamental horticulture. Smith served as horticulture program coordinator and lead instructor at Niagara County Community College since 2002. She earned a master’s in landscape architecture from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a bachelor’s in chemistry from Canisius College, as well as several horticulture and landscape design certifications.

Katherine Stathis (’94) of Rochester has been appointed temporary director of the writing center. Stathis has served as adjunct faculty for FLCC since 2004. She holds a master’s degree in teaching (secondary English) and a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Plattsburgh, as well as an associate’s degree in liberal arts from FLCC.

Joseph Steinert (’05) of Geneva has been hired as biology lab technical specialist. Prior to this, Steinert was a senior lab technician for the College’s Northeast Biomanufacturing Center and Collaborative. He earned an associate’s degree in biotechnology from FLCC.

Ann Still, Esq. of Pittsford has been hired as instructor of paralegal studies. Still has practiced law since 1977, most recently serving as an attorney for Harris Beach. She holds a juris doctorate from Emory University and a bachelor’s in history from Allegheny College.

Patty Tauscher of Victor joins FLCC as instructional specialist, bridge program. Most recently, Tauscher was a case manager and career counselor in continuing education for Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES. She earned a master of human relations/counseling from the University of Oklahoma and a bachelor of arts in sociology from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Elisha Taylor (’04) of Canandaigua has been appointed as student life specialist, part-time. Taylor most recently served as temporary evening administrator in the FLCC Office of Student Life. She holds an associate’s in liberal arts and sciences from FLCC.

Kate Tompkins of Brighton joins FLCC as assistant director of student life. Most recently, Tompkins was area coordinator for residence life at Ithaca College. She earned a master of education in counseling and student affairs from the University of Delaware and a bachelor of arts in education from Colgate University.

Jeffrey Weaver of Fairport has been appointed as technical specialist in the Department of Physical Education and Integrated Health Care. Weaver also serves as an assistant coach for the FLCC men’s basketball team. He holds a bachelor’s in physical education from SUNY Brockport and is currently pursuing a master’s in physical education at SUNY Brockport.
