FLCC Presents Fall 2007 Theatre Production
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2007) – The Finger Lakes Community College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents its annual fall theatre production, “Resident Alien”. The production opens on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. and continues on Friday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 and 8 p.m., and will be held in the John P. Socha Pavilion on FLCC’s Canandaigua campus at 4355 Lakeshore Drive. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the FLCC Office of Student Life starting Oct. 29 for half-price at $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for students and senior citizens. Full-price tickets will also be available at the door before the performance.
“Resident Alien,” by Stuart Spencer, is a comic exploration of what it means to belong. Each of the quirky small-town characters battles with their sense of belonging to family, friends, culture, and society as a whole.
The cast of the production includes the following FLCC students: Jaime Lynn Griffith and Ian Lootens of Canandaigua, Adam Fryer of Geneva, Jonathan Schenk of Manchester, Anthony Iannopollo of Waterloo, and Steven Landgren of Sodus.

The FLCC Alpha Epsilon Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, chartered in 1981, serves the community through programs such as the Relay for Life, Holiday Angel Tree Project, and Adopt-A-Highway. Scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship are the hallmarks of the international organization. To qualify for membership, students must have accumulated 15 or more credit hours and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average.
FLCC Announces First Annual Campus Sustainability Day
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College through its Global Awareness Program presents its first annual “Campus Sustainability Day”, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in room B-440 on the fourth floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr. This program is free and open to the public as part of a national effort of colleges and universities to address their responsibilities in promoting and establishing environmental sustainability policies and practices.
Marty Dodge, professor of environmental conservation and horticulture at FLCC, will speak at 11 a.m. His program, “Global Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities” will consider environmental issues at the larger macro level.
Kim Babcock, conservation technician at FLCC and chairperson for the Center for Sustainable Living, a non-profit organization in the Finger Lakes region, will lead a panel at 12 p.m. titled “Sustainability at the Community Level.”
Marian Brown, special assistant to the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Ithaca College, will speak at 1 p.m. Her presentation, “Campus Sustainability: The Ithaca College Model,” will address how Ithaca College has become a nationally recognized leader of sustainability in higher education.

FLCC Presents “Working Hands: A Confluence of Artists”
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2007) – The Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College will host “Working Hands: A Confluence of Artists” with graphics by Jill Kepler and photography by John Retallack from Nov. 1-30, 2007.
The exhibit is free and open to the public and will include advertising, book and promotional designs by Kepler, as well as the portraiture of Retallack entitled “Colleagues.” The exhibit will also include works created collaboratively by Kepler and Retallack.
Located on the first floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, the Gallery will hold an informal discussion with the artists on Nov. 8 from 1-2 p.m. and a reception on Nov. 9 from 5-7 p.m.
Kepler, 1997 graduate of FLCC, is an assistant professor of graphic design at Roberts Wesleyan College. She earned a master of fine arts in graphic design from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a bachelor of fine arts from Barton College. Prior to joining Roberts Wesleyan, Kepler was an adjunct instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Buffalo. In addition to teaching, she has worked as a freelance designer for JK Design Studios, Kinko’s corporate offices and Chase Pitkin.
Retallack has been an assistant professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology since 1981 and is currently serving as chair of the visual media program. He received his bachelor’s of fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1970. Previously, Retallack was an adjunct instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His exhibited work has included shows at the Schweinfurth Museum in Auburn, N.Y., the Image City Photography gallery and the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester. After a sabbatical to Russia in 1992, Retallack has concentrated on advertising photography and the business of photography.

FLCC Announces Evening College Transfer Fair
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College’s Center for Advisement and Personal Development will host an evening college transfer fair on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event, which will be held on the second floor, B-wing of the FLCC Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. Participants will learn about opportunities to transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
Transfer representatives from Empire State College, Keuka College ASAP Program, Medaille College, St. John Fisher College, SUNY Institute of Technology, SUNY University at Binghamton, and the University of Rochester will be on hand to discuss degree program options and transfer opportunities.

FLCC to Host Veterans Day Ceremony
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony to honor students, faculty, and staff of the College who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces. The community is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, 1 - 2 p.m. in the FLCC gymnasium.
The program will include the Raising of National Colors by an Honor Guard arranged by the American Legion, singing of the national anthem and “God Bless America” by FLCC student singers and remarks by FLCC President, Dr. Barbara Risser. Also, keynote speaker and FLCC Board of Trustees member, retired Lt. Gen. Charles McCausland will present the College with a U.S. flag that has flown over the Capitol building.

FLCC to Host Program for Adults Interested in Attending College

FLCC Offers New Online Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2007) – The Finger Lakes Community College Division of Professional Studies and Continuing Education offers a new, non-credit, online Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program.
Participants in this 485-hour online program will learn the basics of animal anatomy, physiology, and biology as they relate to the care and treatment of common pets, livestock, and lab animals. Students gain the essential skills needed to assist veterinary nurses in all aspects of basic treatment, surgery, and radiology, while also becoming proficient in the administrative practices and procedures involved in running a veterinary office.
Kathy Ruane, chief instructor of the Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program, says, “I know firsthand just how rewarding and satisfying a career in veterinary care can be. People entering the field today are lucky because it offers more opportunities now than ever before. For those eager to get started in this field, the Veterinary Assistant program is the perfect next step.”

FLCC Offers Credit Courses in Eight-Week “Minimesters”
CANANDAIGUA, NY (Oct. 4, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College offers full-semester credit courses in eight-week “minimesters”. The Fall Minimester II runs from Oct. 26 – Dec. 21, 2007. Courses are offered at the Canandaigua campus, the Geneva Campus Center, and the Wayne County Campus Center. Classes are held during the day, in the evening, and online.
These time-condensed courses offer the same academic quality and total instructional time of the College’s traditional classes but can be completed in the shortened eight-week minimester format. Students can take classes in a variety of subjects such as computers, English, physical education, psychology, and others.

FLCC Faculty Members Receive Promotions
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College recently announced the promotion of 12 faculty members. These promotions went into effect at the beginning of the College’s 2007-08 academic year.
Jacob Amidon was promoted to assistant professor of mathematics; Selim Araci, Ph.D. to professor of engineering science; Anoop Bhargava to assistant professor of economics; Edward FitzPatrick to professor of business administration; Milton Johnson to associate professor of speech; Robert O. Kalbach, Ph.D. to professor of chemistry; Cathryn Kent, Esq. to professor of paralegal studies; Christopher McNamara to assistant professor of business; Heather Reece-Tillack to professor of nursing; Geoffrey Smith to associate professor of music; Donald Streeks to assistant professor of business; and Amy Warcup to assistant professor of massage therapy.
Amidon, of Clifton Springs, joined the FLCC faculty in 2002. He received his master’s degree in mathematics from Binghamton University and his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from SUNY Geneseo.
Araci, of Fairport, began teaching at the College in 1987. He earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from SUNY Buffalo and received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Syracuse University. Araci received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007.
Bhargava, of Farmington, has taught at the College since 2001. He received his master’s degree in economics from Claremont Graduate University and his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles.
FitzPatrick, of Canandaigua, began his career at FLCC in 1991. He received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Montana, a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Elmira College, an associate’s degree in data processing from Corning Community College, and an associate’s degree in business administration from Alfred State College.
Johnson, of Canandaigua, was appointed to the faculty in 1999. He holds a master’s degree in communications and a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Indiana State University. In 2007, Johnson received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. He also serves as President of the Faculty Council of Community Colleges.
Kalbach, of Farmington, has served at the College since 1997. He holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of South Florida, as well as a bachelor’s degree in biology and an associate’s degree in engineering technology from the Pennsylvania State University.
Kent, of Fairport, was appointed to the College faculty in 1997. She holds a juris doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the College of Charleston, S.C.
McNamara, of Nunda, began his career at the College in 2002. He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in business administration from Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.
Reece-Tillack, of Canandaigua, has served on the College’s faculty since 1991. She holds a master’s degree in community health nursing and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Rochester, as well as an associate’s degree in nursing from FLCC.
Smith, of Canandaigua, joined the FLCC faculty in 1998. He earned a master’s degree in jazz and contemporary media from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, a New York state teacher’s certification from Nazareth College, and a bachelor’s degree in music performance from SUNY Brockport.
Streeks, of Rochester, began teaching at FLCC in 2002. A certified public accountant, Streeks obtained his master’s degree in accounting and his bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration from James Madison University in Va.
Warcup, of Victor, has taught at the College since 2002. A New York state licensed massage therapist, Warcup has a master’s degree in liberal arts from Empire State College, a bachelor’s degree in communications/media from SUNY Fredonia and an associate’s degree in communications from FLCC. She also is a graduate of the Utah College of Massage Therapy in Salt Lake City and has received advanced training at the Ohashi Institute in New York City.
