SUNY Approves New Online Electronic Commerce Degree Program
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 30, 2007) – A new online electronic commerce degree program at Finger Lakes Community College recently received approval from the State University of New York (SUNY). The program proposal will also go to the New York State Education Department (SED) for final approval. The Middle States Association Accrediting Commission on Higher Education will review the proposal because it will be the first degree program offered by FLCC that is completely online. FLCC will offer the e-commerce degree program through the award-winning SUNY Learning Network (SLN).
“The new online e-commerce degree program will complement our existing computer programs,” said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president of FLCC. “The online program will enable students to complete the degree program without coming to campus, making it ideal for distance learners and professionals in the field.”
Graduates of the electronic commerce program can expect to find careers in the fields of Internet marketing, Web advertising, Web application development, e-commerce sales, e-commerce consulting, and e-commerce Web administration.
Program courses will include the following: Introduction to Programming and Computing, Core Excel, MS Access and Database Processing, Visual Basic, Multimedia Development, Web Site Development and Programming, and Principles of Information Security. Students will also be required to complete an internship in either the field of business or the field of computing science with a course in business.
Currently, FLCC offers associate in science degrees in computer science and information systems and an associate in applied science degree in information technology. In addition, the College offers certificates in applied computer applications and information security.

FLCC Student Sean Bowerman Receives RAVA Scholarship
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 24, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College student Sean Bowerman, of Fairport, recently received a $250 scholarship from the Rochester Audio Visual Association (RAVA) at the group’s recognition dinner. RAVA selected one recipient from each Rochester-area college after hearing student’s presentations, viewing their videos, and learning more about each participant’s desire to pursue a media-related career. Bowerman was one of eight area students to receive this annually awarded honor.
To be eligible for the award, students must have high academic achievement, be enrolled in a media/communications program, have created an outstanding audio-visual project, or have done excellent production-related work on a continuing basis. Students are nominated by faculty at their institutions.
Bowerman’s submission to the scholarship panel included two television stories he scripted, videotaped, and edited for a student-produced news program that was part of the FLCC course COM 124, Television Production II. His segments aired in the spring of 2006 on Finger Lakes Television (FLTV), the public access station housed at the College.
Bowerman, who graduated with a degree in communications in May 2007 will attend SUNY Brockport this fall and major in communications. He also has been involved with other FLTV productions, and completed a summer internship with the Rochester Broadway Theatre League at the Constellation Brands - Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center. In addition, he has been involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including the College’s student publication, The Ghost of Ben Franklin, which features news and opinion pieces. Bowerman also is a Phi Theta Kappa member, the international honor society for two-year colleges.
RAVA, an organization of professionals in media-related fields in the Rochester area, has been offering scholarships for 31 years to outstanding college students pursuing courses of study in various aspects of media communications. Local media-related businesses and RAVA members have provided generous support for these scholarships each year.
FLCC Announces Annual Business Symposium and Competition Results
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 24, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College recently hosted the 16th Annual Business Symposium and Competition for area high schools. Sponsored by the FLCC Business department, this year’s event hosted nearly 250 students from area high schools who competed in six business categories including accounting problem solving, communications, economics, keyboarding, marketing/advertising, and international business. Two FLCC Students Named to NYS Academic Teams
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 24, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College students Christina Schmidt, of Canandaigua, and Michael George, of Geneva, recently were selected as members of the 2007 All-New York Second and Third Academic Teams of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. Schmidt was selected to the Second Team and George to the Third Team.
Schmidt and George were among the students recognized at an awards luncheon in Albany. The event was jointly hosted by the New York Community College Trustees, the Association of Presidents of Public Community Colleges, the Faculty Council of Community Colleges, and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
Students who received the award demonstrated academic excellence, intellectual rigor in their course of study, academic growth, and evidence that they used their education to better themselves, their schools, and their communities.
Schmidt, graduated this May with an associate in arts degree in liberal arts and sciences, and has been named to the Dean’s List. She serves as a student mentor and tutor, and is Phi Theta Kappa’s Western District Vice President of New York.
She participated in the Phi Theta Kappa 2006 International Convention, the 2006 International Honors Institute, and Regional Training Camp. Schmidt also planned and hosted the Western District Fall Leadership Conference. She has participated in several community activities including the Making Strides for Breast Cancer, Relay for Life, Annual Community Clean-up Day and the Ontario County United Way Annual Day of Caring. Her career goal is to become a justice in the New York state court of appeals.
George graduated this May with an associate in science degree in business administration. George is president of the FLCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and he led a debate on the topic of “Gold, Gods, and Glory” at the October 2006 Western/Northern District Phi Theta Kappa Regional Leadership Conference. He also is president of the College Democrats Club and is a member of Alpha Beta Gamma, a national business honor society for students at junior and community colleges. He recently received the FLCC Alumni Association Memorial Scholarship. He also was named to the National Dean’s List, which recognizes students who maintain a 3.50 or higher GPA. George recently joined the Air National Guard and plans to attend SUNY Geneseo.
FLCC Announces Summer Hours
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 22, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College will operate on a modified summer schedule from June 4 – August 3. To meet the needs of summer students and campus visitors, operating hours for most offices will be Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.; however, some offices may be closed on Fridays. In addition, the College will be closed May 28 and July 4.
The following will be open on Fridays: the Admissions Office, the Bursar’s Office, the Center for Advisement and Personal Development (including Career Services), the Child Care Center, the Financial Aid Office, the FLCC Geneva Campus Center, Professional Studies and Continuing Education, and the Registrar’s Office.
The following will be closed on Fridays: the Academic Support Center, the Campus Book Store, Student Health Services, the Student Life Office, and the FLCC Wayne County Campus Center.
The Charles J. Meder Library will offer the following tentative schedule, with any changes to be posted at the Library:
May 21 - June 1: Open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday, closed weekends.
June 4 - August 24: Open 8 a.m. - 9 p.m., Monday - Thursday, closed Friday and weekends.
August 27 - 31: Open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday, closed weekends, closed September 3 for Labor Day.
Regular Library hours resume Tuesday, September 4: Open 7:45 a.m. - 10 p.m., Monday -Thursday; 7:45 a.m. - 4 p.m., Friday; 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday; 12 – 4 p.m., Sunday.
Visitors are advised to call the Canandaigua campus at (585) 394-3500, the FLCC Geneva Campus Center at (315) 789-6701, or the FLCC Wayne County Campus Center at (315) 331-9098 in advance to verify office hours or to make appointments to meet with counselors during the summer months.
Beginning August 6, the College will resume its normal schedule. Hours of operation will be Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Five FLCC Employees Receive SUNY Chancellor’s Awards
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 22, 2007) – Five Finger Lakes Community College faculty and staff members recently were honored with the State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence for 2007. This recognition is considered the highest honor award presented by the SUNY System. The recipients were recognized at FLCC’s Annual Employee Recognition Program and at the College’s 39th Annual Commencement Ceremonies on May 19.
Recipients and the awards they received were:
•Dr. Selim Araci, of Fairport, Excellence in Teaching;
•Milton L. Johnson, of Canandaigua, Excellence in Faculty Service;
•David R. McGuire, of Rochester, Excellence in Teaching;
•Colleen M. O’Mara, of Farmington, Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities;
•John M. Taylor, of Farmington, Excellence in Professional Service.
Araci, associate professor of engineering science, began teaching at the College in 1987. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from SUNY Buffalo and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Syracuse University. He received FLCC’s Distinguished Service Award in 1997 for his professional service to the College. Araci teaches courses for the engineering science and the mechanical design and drafting degree programs.
Johnson, assistant professor of speech, previously taught at Indiana State University and Monroe Community College. He has a master’s degree in communications and a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Indiana State University. Johnson currently serves as the chair of the College’s Academic Senate, and will serve as the president of the Faculty Council of Community Colleges beginning in July.
McGuire, assistant professor of music, has taught full-time at FLCC since 1999. He earned a doctorate in music theory from the University of Buffalo, a master’s degree in music from Arizona State University, and a bachelor’s degree in music theory and mathematics from Nazareth College. McGuire is noted for his ability to bring to the classroom experience as a performer, scholar, clinician, and composer.
O’Mara, professor of theatre and chairperson of the department of visual and performing arts, began teaching theater courses at FLCC in 1979. She earned a master’s degree in acting and directing from Syracuse University, a bachelor’s degree in drama and theatre from Chaminade University, and an associate’s degree in art from Villa Maria College. O’Mara has assumed the roles of producer, director, and designer for more than 50 FLCC theatre productions.
Taylor ’79, manager of administrative LANS, desktop and user support in the institutional computer services department, has worked at FLCC since 1993. He has a master’s degree from Nazareth College in management science, a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome, and an associate’s degree in science from FLCC. Taylor is responsible for managing and supporting a myriad of computer systems and applications, and he is known for conducting proactive research and development. Additionally, he played a leadership role in the implementation of the College’s intranet system.
Dr. Daniel T. Hayes Named FLCC President Emeritus; Full Professorship Granted
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 21, 2007) – Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, retiring president of Finger Lakes Community College, received special recognition from the College’s Board of Trustees at FLCC’s commencement ceremony on May 19, 2007. Dr. Hayes will retire effective August 31 after 15 years of service.
The Board of Trustees recognized Hayes’ outstanding leadership and achievements as president of the College since 1992 by bestowing upon him the honor of President Emeritus of Finger Lakes Community College. Dr. Hayes is credited with:
• demonstrating leadership which has led to the creation of new academic programs,
• enhancing additional main campus College facilities,
• enhancing and adding campus center and field station facilities,
• enhancing relations with the College’s sponsor, Ontario County,
• providing steady and assured leadership during times of crisis and times of institutional prosperity,
• overseeing an institution that in fall 2007 experienced the highest enrollment in its history,
• working with all appropriate parties to finalize the refurbishment of the C-MAC and the completion of the first on-campus student housing facility,
• enhancing opportunities for former, current, and prospective students of Finger Lakes Community College.
“Dr. Hayes has performed his duties as President consistently with dignity, humility, a polished demeanor, and the embodiment of class,” noted Robert Griswold, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “His exemplary and admirable leadership has shaped the institution and provided a solid path for the future of the College. Because of his achievements both at the College and within State University of New York, Dr. Hayes has earned and enjoyed the respect of his colleagues and fellow Presidents of the SUNY community colleges.”
In addition, the Board of Trustees honored Dr. Daniel T. Hayes with a Distinguished Full Professorship should he desire to contribute to Finger Lakes Community College through scholarly activities and pursuits. The rank of full professor is granted to Dr. Hayes for his commitment to learning and education.
“Throughout his presidency, Dr. Hayes’ commitment to learning has been evidenced through his dedication to the education of our students,” commented Griswold. “We are pleased to offer this honor to Dr. Hayes.”
Dr. Daniel T. Hayes served as the third president of Finger Lakes Community College, which was established in 1965. Prior to starting his presidency at FLCC, Hayes was executive vice president of educational services at South Suburban College in South Holland, Illinois, and dean of instruction at John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois. Hayes received his Ph.D. in speech communication with a collateral field in higher education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, his master’s degree in speech communication from Emporia State University in Kansas, and his bachelor’s degree in education in English and speech from Kansas State Teacher’s College. He held faculty positions at the University of Vermont, John Wood Community College, and the Kansas City, Kansas school district and teaching assistant positions at the University of Missouri and Emporia State University.
FLCC to Host Campus Visit for Adults on June 12
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 15, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College’s Campus Visit for Adults will be held at the College’s Canandaigua campus on June 12, 2007, from 4-6:30 p.m. Prospective adult students will have the opportunity to learn more about balancing school with a busy schedule, completing a degree that was started years ago, and gaining workplace skills for immediate employment. Additionally, attendees will be able to learn about FLCC’s areas of study, part-time programs, online options, and financial aid. Attendees also can find out how their previously-earned college credit can fit into a Finger Lakes Community College degree.
Information tables will be available from 4-6:30 p.m., a “Where to Start” session will begin at 4:45 p.m., and a “Financial Aid” session will begin at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are welcome anytime throughout the event, and reservations can be made online at www.flcc.edu/admissions or by phone at (585) 394-FLCC, ext. 7278.
FLCC Foundation Announces 2007 Benefactor Award
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 15, 2007) – The Finger Lakes Community College Foundation recently honored Michael Orwen ‘77 and Suzanne Orwen ‘91 as the Foundation’s 2007 Benefactor Award recipients at the 23rd Annual Widmer’s Honors Reception in Canandaigua.
Over the past two years, the Orwens have generously donated $11,500 for the department of business and the Dr. Charles J. Meder Library. Their stipulation to the library staff and the department of business was as follows: identify program needs not included in the College budget and purchase items that would supplement the curriculum. The library staff members chose to acquire volumes of books, many of which relate to the business curriculum. Members of the department of business wanted to upgrade the audio-visual system used in their classrooms, and these contributions can now be seen in rooms C433 and B418.
The Foundation established its Benefactor Award in 1998 to recognize individuals and companies that demonstrate exemplary support for the mission of the FLCC Foundation. Honorees receive a sculpture by Wayne Williams, FLCC art professor emeritus, that depicts a person’s hand holding an acorn, a metaphor for the nurturing of the seed of knowledge. Previous recipients of the Benefactor Award include Susanne Gardner Kennedy (1998), the late Marvin Sands and Widmer’s Wine Cellars Inc. (1999), Mrs. Florence M. Muller (2000), Mrs. Carole Hayden and the late Dr. Hayden (2001), the ExxonMobil Foundation (2002), George K. Fraley (2003), Janelle Plumb ‘92 (2004), Keith Glover (2005), and Eric Zimmerman ‘88 and Connie White (2006).
The FLCC Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable corporation established to seek financial support for the College from the private sector. FLCC Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients At 23rd Annual Widmer’s Honors Reception
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 10, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College honored 75 student scholars at the 23rd annual Widmer’s Honors Reception held recently at the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua. Constellation Wines and Finger Lakes Community College Foundation co-sponsored the event.
Scholarships were presented to full- and part-time students returning to FLCC in the fall and transferring to four-year colleges and universities by Foundation Board Chair, Scott B. Trumbower, and FLCC President, Daniel T. Hayes, Ph.D. Students apply for and are selected to receive the awards based on a variety of criteria relating to major, grade point average, and intended occupation. The awards range from $100 to one year’s tuition cost for the 2007-08 academic year.
Board Chairman Trumbower explained, “This event continues to be a wonderful way to bring the benefactors and students together so we can publicly thank individuals, corporations, and organizations for their generosity, as well as honor the talents and academic success of our students”.
