Community Open Forums to be Held at FLCC for Presidential Finalists

With the August 2007 retirement of Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president of Finger Lakes Community College, the names of five presidential finalists have been announced by the Presidential Search Advisory Committee.

The five finalists are: Cheryl A. Groeneveld, former vice president for finance, administration, and advancement at Fitchburg State College, Fitchburg, MA; Dr. Philip E. Gover, interim president at Cayuga Community College, Auburn, NY; Dennis Kessler, executive professor of business administration and entrepreneurship at William E. Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; owner of the Kessler Group, Inc., and owner of the Kessler Family, LLC, Rochester, NY; Dr. Judy I. Murray, vice president of academic and student development at Tomball College, North Harris Montgomery Community College District, Tomball, TX; and Dr. Barbara G. Risser, vice president of student and academic services, Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, NY.

Groeneveld
served as the vice president for finance, administration, and advancement at Fitchburg State College from 2002 through 2005. Previously, she served as the vice president for finance and management for SUNY Cortland in Cortland, NY from 1998 through 2002. From 1980 through 1998, she also held a variety of positions at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, MA, including dean of the business division; vice president, administration/CFO; associate professor and computer integrated manufacturing coordinator; dean of administrative services; director of personnel; director of institutional research.

Groeneveld is scheduled to receive a doctorate in English literature from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in May 2007. She received a master’s of arts degree and bachelor’s of arts degree in English literature from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, as well as a master’s of business administration from Western New England College in Springfield, MA.

Gover, Ed. D., has been serving as the interim president at Cayuga Community College since 2006. He also held the positions of vice president of academic and student affairs and dean of faculty from 2002-2006. Previously, he was the executive vice president for academic and student affairs at Morton College in Cicero, IL. Additionally, he has held the positions of vice president of instructional services at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, IL; dean of instruction at Edison Community College in Naples, FL; dean of economics and business at Community College of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA; chairperson of business and engineering division at Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA; and full-time faculty member at Spoon River College in Canton, IL.

Gover received a doctorate in higher education administration as well as a master’s of science degree in business education from Illinois State University. Additionally, he earned a bachelor’s of science degree in business education from Eastern Illinois University.

Since 1977, Kessler has served as owner of the Kessler Group, Inc., and owner of the Kessler Family, LLC. Additionally, since 2004 he has served as executive professor of business administration and entrepreneurship at William E. Simon Graduate School of Business. From 1973 through 1998, Kessler also held a variety of teaching positions, including adjunct assistant professor of sociology at Monroe Community College; adjunct assistant professor of sociology and law at St. John Fisher College; adjunct assistant professor at SUNY Brockport; instructor of sociology at the City University of New York; and adjunct lecturer in sociology at Seton Hall University in Newark, NJ.

Kessler received a master’s degree from Yale University Law School, a master’s of arts degree and a bachelor’s of science degree from John Jay College, City University of New York.

Murray
, Ph. D., has been serving as vice president of academic and student development at Tomball College since 2001. She previously served as the dean of mathematics, science, and career education at Genesee Community College in addition to holding a number of positions at Clark State Community College in Springfield, OH, which included acting assistant dean of arts and sciences, math/science coordinator, and associate professor in the business division. Murray held the position of course manager at Wright State University in Dayton, OH.

Murray received a doctorate in higher education administration from Ohio State University, a master’s of science degree in mathematics from Wright State University, and a bachelor’s of arts degree in mathematics from SUNY at Potsdam.

Risser, Ed. D., has served as the vice president of student and academic services at Onondaga Community College since 2004. Additionally, she previously served at Onondaga Community College as associate vice president for arts and sciences, professor of English/reading, and chair of the faculty.

Risser holds a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania. She received a master’s of science degree in reading education from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s of arts degree in English education from Hartwick College.

FLCC Announces Summer Session Registration

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 24, 2007) – Registration for Summer Session credit courses at Finger Lakes Community College is currently underway at the Registrar’s Office, Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive.

This summer FLCC is offering a wide range of day and evening credit courses during summer sessions. New courses start all the time with classes starting in May, June, July, and August. For a complete schedule, visit www.flcc.edu/summer.

Students can register by mail or in-person. A mail-in registration form is available at www.flcc.edu/summer. In-person registration is held at the Registrar’s Office. Classes fill up quickly; students are encouraged to register early.

Students born on or after January 1, 1957, and registering for six or more credit hours must provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella in order to attend classes. Additionally, New York state requires that all students enrolled in six or more credits (except Gemini students) receive information on meningococcal meningitis disease and complete a meningitis response form. When registering, Ontario County residents must present identification with signature, and non-Ontario County residents must obtain a Certificate of Residence from their county treasurer.

FLCC Computer Fair Winners Announced

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 24, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College recently hosted a computer fair for high school students. Approximately 40 students from Victor Senior High School, McQuaid Jesuit High School, Wayne Finger Lakes BOCES, and Marcus Whitman Central participated in this year’s event. The winners included the following:

Three $400 scholarships to attend FLCC will be given to McQuaid Jesuit High School for their selection of deserving students.

FLCC offers degree programs in information systems, information technology, and computer science; certificate programs in applied computer applications and information security.

FLCC’s Global Awareness Series Presents “An Evening of Japanese Drumming”

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 20, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College, through the Global Awareness Series, presents “An Evening of Japanese Drumming” on Wednesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in Stage 13, located on the second floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. A sampling of sushi will be available for tasting after the group’s performance. The program is free and open to the public.

The program will feature Taikoza, an acclaimed Japanese percussion group. Taikoza features taiko drums which are very large, barrel-like drums that create a sound of rolling thunder. They also incorporate bamboo flutes and the koto, a thirteen string instrument, into their performances. The group has performed at the Washington, D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival many times and has toured throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

FLCC Hosts Business Symposium and Competition For Area High Schools; Michael J. Miller Guest Speaker

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 19, 2007) – The 16th Annual Business Symposium and Competition for area high schools will take place at Finger Lakes Community College, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua, on Friday, May 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Nearly 250 students from 15-20 area high schools will compete in six business categories: accounting problem solving, communications, economics, keyboarding, marketing/advertising, and international business. Category competitions will take place between 10 and 11 a.m. For participating high school teachers, an experiential activity will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

At the opening of the day’s events, FLCC graduate Michael J. Miller, vice president of Global Security at Global Crossing Ltd., will be the guest speaker. Miller earned an associate’s degree in accounting from FLCC in 1989 and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. John Fisher College. In 2003, Miller led the implementation of Global Crossing’s Network Security Agreement (NSA) with the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Department of Defense, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. The NSA protects the U.S. government’s interest in the telecommunications industry from foreign ownership. Miller will be sharing his experience during the presentation.

Sponsored by the FLCC Department of Business, the event will conclude with a ceremony at 12 p.m., during which time the winning teams will receive awards.

FLCC Hosts Spring Arts Festival: an evening of visual and performing arts entertainment

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 17, 2007) – The Finger Lakes Community College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents the 27th annual Spring Arts Festival on Friday, May 4, beginning at 7:00 p.m. This free event will begin in Room B355/Music Hall, FLCC Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive.

The festival will start with the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Maria Gillard, and will continue with the College Singers, directed by Ines Draskovic. The festival will resume in the cafeteria with a theatre presentation, “The Trial of Goldilocks,” directed by Jim Perri. Afterward, the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Geoff Smith, will give a performance.

The final part of the evening will be held in the Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 on the first floor of Finger Lakes Community College and will feature a student honors art exhibit and an awards presentation. Refreshments will be served.

The Visual and Performing Arts department offers degrees in communications, fine arts, graphic design, music, music recording technology, and theatre arts.

Save the Date! FLCC Hosts 39th Annual Commencement Ceremonies

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 17, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College will host its Thirty-Ninth Annual Commencement Ceremony Saturday, May 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (C-MAC) located on the FLCC Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. A reception will follow the ceremony. The Commencement Address will be given by New York State Assemblyman Brian M. Kolb
(R,C,I –Canandaigua). Tickets are not required, and friends and family members are encouraged to attend.

The Nursing Advancement Ceremony, a special commencement ceremony for nursing students, will take place May 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the C-MAC. Admission to the Nursing Advancement Ceremony is free and open to friends and family members of FLCC students who are graduating from the College’s nursing program.

FLCC Hosts Faculty and Staff Reading to Celebrate National Poetry Month

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 5, 2007) – The Finger Lakes Community College Department of Humanities is celebrating National Poetry Month by hosting its fifth annual FLCC faculty and staff poetry reading April 23 at 7 p.m. The event takes place at the Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 on the first floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, and is free and open to the public.

Participants may share the work of others as well as original work, since this event recognizes not only the art of writing poetry but also the importance of poetry in people’s lives.

Students interested in humanities at FLCC may earn an associate in arts degree in liberal arts and sciences with an advisement area for transfer in humanities. This degree program prepares students for transfer with full junior standing to a wide range of public and private four-year institutions. FLCC humanities courses allow students to develop their verbal and critical thinking skills and to enrich their intellectual lives by doing everything from writing fiction, poetry, and news stories, to studying Shakespeare and Toni Morrison, to examining the philosophy of Plato and modern business ethics.

FLCC Hosts Information Technology Career Night for Adult Learners

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 5, 2007) – Have you thought about a career in computers but don’t know how to get started? Take the first step toward a degree or certificate program in computers by attending an Information Technology Career Night at Finger Lakes Community College. This event will take place at the FLCC Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, on Thursday, May 3, at 6 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public, but advance reservations are requested by April 30.

FLCC’s Information Technology Career Night will provide key information for adults looking for exciting opportunities in the computer industry. Workshop participants will learn about FLCC’s degree programs in information systems, information technology, and computer science; certificate programs in applied computer applications and information security, as well as the pending e-commerce degree program. They will see the College computer facilities, which house up-to-date software and peripherals tailored to the needs of the classes.

In addition, participants will meet FLCC computing sciences faculty, who will discuss the College’s high placement rate for graduates of computer-related programs who actively seek employment, and FLCC administrative staff, who will provide information about the admissions and financial aid processes, academic support services, and career counseling. Additionally, participants will be able to tour the FLCC computer labs.

FLCC Student Club Plans Local “Step-It-Up” Event

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 3, 2007) –The Finger Lakes Community College student organization Finger Lakes Environmental Action (F.L.E.A.) will host “Step-It-Up” on Saturday, April 14 from noon to 5 p.m. The event, free and open to the public, will be held outside near the College’s library entrance. Free refreshments will be available.

“Step-It-Up” is a nationwide campaign comprised of more than 1000 events in 50 states rallying around the need for a reduction in carbon emissions. “The groundswell of support for this effort is incredible,” said national Step-it-Up Organizer, Bill McKibben. “This is truly a vital grassroots movement, organized mainly through word of mouth, email outreach among friends, and the online community.”

Activities held at FLCC during the event will include a bicycle ride through Canandaigua (participants must bring their own bicycles), guided FLCC trail tours, information booths on alternative energy, and more.

F.L.E.A. provides the College and local community with education about the environment and conscientious living.
