FLCC Honors Program Presents “Words & Music: A Songwriters Circle”

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 29, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College Honors program presents “Words & Music: A Songwriters Circle” on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. The event will take place in Stage 13, located on the second floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. The program, with the support of the Alumni Association and Student Corporation, is free and open to the public.

“Words & Music: A Songwriters Circle” will feature four regional songwriters in intimate performance and conversation. Performers will share original songs and discuss their craft.

A pair of FLCC music alumni will open the event: Leo Medler, class of ’06 and Erin Maloney, class of ’01. Following a short intermission, professional singer-songwriters Maria Gillard and Lisa Bigwood will take the stage. Gillard is noted for an alto voice and jazzy stylings while Bigwood is known for bluesy folk stylings. Gillard is also an adjunct music faculty member and founding director of the FLCC Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

FLCC Presents Spring 2007 Theatre Production

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 22, 2007) – For its annual spring theatre production, the Finger Lakes Community College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents “The Star-Spangled Girl” by Neil Simon. The production opens on Thursday, April 12 at 8 p.m. and will continue on Friday, April 13 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 14 at 2 and 8 p.m. It will be held in the John P. Socha Pavilion on FLCC’s Canandaigua campus at 4355 Lakeshore Drive.

Tickets will be available at the door before the performances, with prices of $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the FLCC Student Life Center starting April 2 for half-price at $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for students and senior citizens.

Love and politics blend in Simon’s “The Star-Spangled Girl.” The story centers around two young men publishing a subversive political newspaper out of their apartment. Despite their struggles to make rent and pay the printer, their lives are going smoothly until an all-American girl moves next door. A love triangle ensues despite political differences, and the play twists and turns through a series of comedic situations that are Simon’s trademark.

The cast of the production consists of the following FLCC students: Kaleigh Leslie-Taylor of Naples, Brian Michalko of Canandaigua, and Kathryn Snyder of Geneva.

FLCC’s Global Awareness Series Presents “An Evening of Italian Dance, Music, and Drum”

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 15, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College, through the Global Awareness Series, presents “An Evening of Italian Dance, Music, and Drum” on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. The event will take place in Stage 13, located on the second floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. A sampling of Italian foods, including assorted antipasto and minestrone soup, will be available for tasting at 8 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.

The program will feature Alessandra Belloni and her troupe I Giullari Di Piazza. Belloni is an artist in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Belloni is also noteworthy as a Remo Signature Series Artist, having developed her Italian signature series of tambourines in conjunction with Remo Incorporated, a leader in the percussion industry.

FLCC Hosts Spring Visitation Day Events for Area High School Juniors and Seniors

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 13, 2007) – High school juniors and seniors can learn more about college life and academic programs of study at Finger Lakes Community College during the 2007 Spring Visitation Day events. The College will offer information about admissions, financial aid, transfer and career programs, and student activities on campus. High school students will have the opportunity to tour the campus and meet with professors in their academic fields of interest.

The 2007 Spring Visitation Day events will be held the mornings of Tuesday, April 17, 2007, and Friday, April 27, 2007. A session for students who are undecided about their college major will also take place on Tuesday, April 17, 2007, and will focus on career exploration and decision making.

FLCC Students Honored at SUNY Art Exhibition

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 13, 2007) – Four students of the Finger Lakes Community College Visual and Performing Arts Department participated in the 2006 Fall SUNY Student Art Exhibition in Albany, NY. The pieces were selected by FLCC faculty based on quality of technique, concept of artwork, and use of expression.

Steve Byington of Naples submitted the monoprint piece “Untitled,” which was featured in the 2006 Fall SUNY Student Art Exhibition catalogue. Byington’s piece was awarded “Best in Show” and will be featured in the upcoming 2007 Summer SUNY Student Art Show at the Albany State Museum.

Alicia Czadzeck of Clyde submitted an oil on canvas piece entitled “Self Portrait.”

Eric Holbein of Palmyra submitted a graphite piece entitled “Window.”

Jeff Stanin of Manchester submitted a digital print entitled “Morning Crucifixion.”

Presented at SUNY’s State University Plaza, the 2006 Fall SUNY Student Art Exhibition contained a range of 129 student artworks from 24 SUNY campuses. SUNY initiated the shows in 2002 to bring wider exposure to student and faculty artwork. Works from the shows can also be viewed at the SUNY Online Art Gallery, accessible from www.suny.edu.

FLCC’s Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 Presents Faculty Exhibit

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (March 8, 2007) – The department of visual and performing arts at Finger Lakes Community College will host its biennial faculty exhibition at the Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 from March 29-April 26. The exhibit will demonstrate the efforts of faculty in both the graphic design and fine arts programs. Both full-time and adjunct faculty will be displaying their work in this exhibit.

Located on the first floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, the Gallery will hold an opening reception with faculty on Thursday, March 29 from 6-8 p.m. The event will be hosted by the Finger Lakes Community College Foundation.

The full-time faculty includes: Sarah Barry, instructor of art, and John Fox, professor of art, both of Canandaigua; Elizabeth Brownell, assistant professor of graphic arts, of Irondequoit; and Barron Naegel, gallery director and instructor of art, of Victor. Barry will display oil paintings, Fox is displaying furniture and photography, Brownell will be showing digital illustrations, and Naegel will display sculpture and drawings.

The adjunct faculty includes: Karen Strapp, of Bloomfield; Barbara Senglaub, of Brighton; John Nihart and Ted Williams, of Canandaigua; Josh Coons, of Conesus; Jason Flack, of Rochester; and Katherine Oliver, of Hammondsport. Strapp will display prints of website designs, Senglaub is displaying oil paintings, Nihart will be showing sculpture, Williams will be showing illustrations, Coons is displaying framed designs, Flack will display photographs, and Oliver will display her graphic designs.
