FLCC’s Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 Presents “Reflections: The Teacher As Artist”
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2007) — The Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College presents an exhibition of oil paintings entitled “Reflections: The Teacher As Artist” by Howard Barry, of Holley, NY.
Located on the first floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, the Gallery will host the exhibition Feb. 8, 2007- March 16, 2007. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8 from 1-2 p.m.
The works shown will be comprised of both landscape and still lifes he completed this past year. In addition, the demonstration artwork that Barry created while teaching drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics will be displayed in the gallery.
Barry, who graduated from Buffalo State College with a bachelor of arts degree and master of arts degree in art education, taught art at the Holley junior and senior high schools for more than 30 years. All of Barry’s children majored in art while in college, and daughters Alice and Sarah teach art at Houghton College and Finger Lakes Community College, respectively.
Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. FLCC Hosts SUNY Financial Aid Day
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2007)— Finger Lakes Community College will host a SUNY financial aid day at the College’s Canandaigua campus on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 10 a.m-noon. SUNY’s Statewide Student Financial Aid Days are offered as a service to all prospective college students and their families. Each campus program is designed to answer questions and provide assistance regarding the financial aid application, types of aid available, and the award process. If you are a parent or student interested in attending, you may register for this event at http://www.suny.edu/studentevents. You may also register by calling (800) 342-3811. Those who register will receive a confirmation letter prior to the event with details about the program.
Attendees can choose to attend one of the following three 10 a.m. presentations:
1) General Financial Aid Presentation- an overview of the process of applying for financial aid. This will include a question and answer period. If you have attended a financial aid program at your high school, it may not be necessary to attend this session.
2) Filing FAFSA on the Web- a group presentation providing a review of the FAFSA on the web, instructions for filing, and helpful tips for completing the form.
3) FAFSA Overview Presentation- a group presentation providing a review of the FAFSA paper version, instructions for filing, and helpful tips for completing the form.

FLCC Announces Fall 2006 Dean’s List
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. ( Jan. 23, 2007) — Finger Lakes Community College’s Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Dr. Thomas E. Topping recently announced the FLCC dean’s list for the fall 2006 semester. More than 430 students received this honor.
To be eligible for the FLCC fall semester dean’s list, students must attend full time, be matriculated, earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and complete 12 or more credit hours successfully.
FLCC and TV Course Offer GED Preparation
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2007) — Finger Lakes Community College is offering guidance and educational tools to supplement a television course that helps people prepare for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) exam. Beginning Jan. 29, “GED Connection” will air on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. on FLTV Channel 12, with repeat broadcasts on Saturdays from l to 2 p.m.
Lessons will also air on WXXI Channel 21 in Rochester and WCNY Channel 24 in Syracuse. Consult your local television listings or contact the television station for more information.
Through the telecourse and FLCC, students will be able to view the lessons, complete workbook assignments, and speak with a tutor each week. The program covers the five major subject areas on the exam: writing, reading, social studies, science, and mathematics. Lessons focus on the workplace and demonstrate practical applications of the skills and knowledge learned for the GED exam. Assigned tutors will be available for assistance in all subject areas. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.

FLCC and TV Course Offer ESL Instruction
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2007) — Finger Lakes Community College is offering guidance and educational tools to supplement a nationally televised instruction program for speakers of other languages who want to improve their English language skills by studying at home.
The weekly half-hour comedy/drama entitled “Crossroads Café” will air on FLTV channel 12 at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 31. Each episode will be repeated on Sundays at 12:30 p.m. The program will also air on WXXI Channel 21 in Rochester and on WCNY Channel 24 in Syracuse. Consult your local television listings or contact the television station for more information.
The 26-part series follows the lives of six characters of various ethnic backgrounds. In addition to learning English from the “Café” characters, viewers will gain insight into other aspects of U.S. culture, such as seeking citizenship and finding jobs.
Audiences will learn to speak, read, and write English by watching the program, completing workbook assignments, and contacting their FLCC tutor each week. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.

Finger Lakes Chorale Seeks Singers for May Concerts
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (January 9, 2007) — The Finger Lakes Chorale of Finger Lakes Community College, under the direction of Dennis Maxfield, is seeking new members for two concerts May 5/6. Performances will include Johannes Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzes” and Edward Elgar’s “Scenes From The Bavarian Highlands”.
Beginning January 30, rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in Room B-355 at FLCC’s Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. Auditions are not required; however, prior choral singing experience is necessary. A $5 non-credit registration fee is payable at the first rehearsal.
Participants have the option of earning one college credit as a member of the Chorale by enrolling in, paying tuition costs for, and completing requirements for the course MUS 120 Finger Lakes Chorale.

FLCC Board of Trustees Elects Officers for 2007
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 9, 2007)— The Board of Trustees at Finger Lakes Community College recently held its election of officers for the year 2007. Re-elected were: Robert Griswold of Phelps, chair; Anne Galbraith of Canandaigua, vice chair; and Donald I. Wickham of Victor, secretary.
“Mr. Griswold, Ms. Galbraith, and Mr. Wickham bring a high level of experience and knowledge to their respective roles as officers of the Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president of FLCC. “Their leadership and stewardship of the financial resources of the College and their concern for the education and welfare of students serves the residents of Ontario County and the Finger Lakes region well.”
Griswold is currently chairman of Ontario Telephone Company, Inc. and the Trumansburg Telephone Company. He has been a member of the FLCC Board of Trustees since 1999, serving as secretary in 2002 and 2003, vice chair in 2004 and 2005, and chair in 2006. He also serves as a member of the Board of the Ontario County Industrial Development Agency.
A few of his past activities include: chairman of the Board of the Ontario County Industrial Development Agency, chairman and board member of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the Rochester area; chairman and board member of Finger Lakes Long Term Care Insurance Company; chairman and board member of the New York State Telecommunications Association, Inc.; member of the Board of Directors of the Deposit Telephone Company, Inc.; president of the Empire Chapter Independent Telephone Pioneers; member of the Regional Advisory Board of Fleet Bank; member of the Finger Lakes Community College Foundation Board of Directors; trustee of the Village of Clifton Springs; and president of Clifton Springs YMCA.
Griswold is a graduate of Clifton Springs Central School and received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force Reserve with the rank of captain.
Galbraith, a member of the Board since 2000, served as secretary in 2004 and 2005, and vice-chair in 2006. She presently serves as Trustee liaison to the FLCC Alumni Association.
She is currently an attorney specializing in family law, in particular the representation of children. She opened her own practice in Canandaigua in 1991. In 2001, Galbraith received the Hon. Michael F. Dillon Award for Outstanding Representation of Children in the Seventh Judicial District. Previously, she was vice president and senior attorney for Chase Lincoln First Bank. She also held several positions at Lincoln First Bank, such as assistant vice president and assistant counsel as well as staff attorney.
Galbraith received her juris doctor degree from Syracuse University College of Law and her bachelor’s degree from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She is a member of the New York State and Yates County Bar Associations. She is a past president of the Ontario County Bar Association, and previously served in other positions in that Association. Galbraith is past chairperson of the South Bristol Zoning Board of Appeals. She has volunteered extensively in the Canandaigua schools and at church.
Wickham, a member of the Board since 2001, served as secretary in 2006, he presently serves as the Trustee liaison to the student corporation. Wickham owned and operated a large vegetable and grain farm in the Stanley area for 40 years. Currently, he farms part-time, working with one of his sons. He graduated from Gorham High School and received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Cornell University.
His past activities include: Town of Seneca Zoning Board and chairman for 12 years; member of the Village of Victor Urban Renewal Board; director of the New York/Buffalo branch of the Federal Reserve Board; director of National Bank of Geneva for 30 years; and director and past president of Pro-Fac Cooperative, a national farmer owned cooperative. He previously served in many different capacities in the Gorham Rotary Club.
Wickham is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Canandaigua and has served on both the finance committee and the Board of Trustees.
Other FLCC Board of Trustee members include William A. Bigham, Dr. Karen Davison Blazey and Jeffrey A. Friend of Canandaigua; Harry G. Burt of Geneva; Gen. Charles P. McCausland of Hall; John T. Hicks of Seneca Castle; and student trustee Wes Comstock of Penn Yan.
Governor Pataki Appoints John T. Hicks to FLCC Board of Trustees
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Jan. 9, 2007) — John T. Hicks, ’90, of Seneca Castle, N.Y. was recently appointed to the Finger Lakes Community College Board of Trustees. The appointment was made by former Governor Pataki in December of 2006 to replace Robert A. Belmont, whose term recently expired. Hicks’ term will continue through June 2013.
“Mr. Hicks brings an enormous amount of experience, knowledge, and commitment to the FLCC Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president of FLCC. “Through his former role as Ontario County Administrator as well as his subsequent work with the DEC, he has time and again demonstrated his dedication to FLCC. His presence on the Board will be an asset to the College and its students.”
Among his many private-sector activities, Hicks is presently a Director of Organix Green Industry; a Director of Terranew LLC; the President of Hi Zor Farms; the President of C.R. Zornow, Inc.; a Partner with Tri-Blend, Inc.; and an Associate with Cantanise Associates.
Hicks has been actively involved in the public sector for more than 35 years serving as Ontario County Administrator from 1984-1995; the Regional Director of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) from 1996-2003; and the New York State Commissioner to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission from 1996-2003. Furthermore, in addition to serving as the Supervisor for the Town of Seneca from 1972-1981, Hicks served as the Board Chairman and the Budget Officer for the Ontario County Board of Supervisors.
Hicks currently serves as a labor relations and municipal affairs consultant. He also serves as an economic development consultant for Clough Harbour and as an economic development specialist for the Ontario County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). Additionally, Hicks serves as the Chairman of the Agricultural Advisory Committee under Congressman John R. Kuhl. Also, Hicks has given numerous presentations on Total Quality Management (TQM) to a variety of organizations.
In addition to many other community service activities, Hicks has served on the Board of Directors for the National Bank of Geneva; on the Board of Directors for Geneva General Hospital; as the President for the Finger Lakes Regional Arts Council; and as the President for the Cooperative Extension.
Hicks earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics and accounting from Hobart College and an associate in applied science degree in business administration from Finger Lakes Community College. Furthermore, Hicks served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1954-1957.
