FLCC Announces Honors Courses for the Spring 2007 Semester

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Dec. 21, 2006) — Two honors seminars will be offered at Finger Lakes Community College during the Spring 2007 semester (Jan. 29 – May 18). Both classes are three-credit honors courses.

“Honors Seminar I Topic: The Graphic Novel” (HON 100) will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:20 p.m. Led by Assistant Professor of Graphic Arts Elizabeth Brownell and Assistant Professor of English Jon Palzer, the class will give students the chance to study the dynamic narrative relationship between language and image. An examination of the alliance between the graphic novel and film will be considered as students view movie adaptations of popular graphic novels in an effort to define significant similarities and distinctions between the two forms. Furthermore, the seminar will provide students the opportunity to create at least a portion of their own graphic novel as a means of putting in practice some of the principle methods of this unique literary and graphic expression.

“The Hearth Project: A Writer’s Retreat”(HON 200) will give students the chance to explore philosophy, literature, and the arts by combining class time with required retreats at the FLCC Muller Field Station on Honeoye Lake. Led by Instructor of English Alton Jowers and Associate Professor of Philosophy John Talbot, students will have the opportunity to build a foundation in the humanities and then reinforce these experiences through an immersion in nature. The retreats will encourage interdisciplinary activities ranging from prose and poetry to painting and music while instilling a greater love and understanding of nature. The class will meet on the following dates:

Tuesday, January 30, 2007, 6:30 - 9:20 p.m.
The weekends of February 23-25; March 23-25; and April 20-22

FLCC honors courses are designed to present stimulating, enriching material through discussion and study in a manner that encourages critical thinking and creative self-expression. Students who successfully complete a series of honors courses may earn an honors certificate upon graduation, which may increase their transfer options to four-year institutions.

FLCC Establishes Men’s and Women’s Intercollegiate Track Teams

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. ( Dec. 12, 2006) — The Board of Trustees of Finger Lakes Community College gave approval last evening to the establishment of men’s and women’s intercollegiate track teams beginning with the spring 2007 semester.

According to Bob Lowden, FLCC athletic director, “we have been watching the growth of track at the scholastic and collegiate level for some time. Our local Section V is extremely strong in track and local athletes are looking for colleges that have both cross-country and track teams. We hope this addition will provide an opportunity for our local runners and will provide another opportunity for parents and families to come out and support them.”

FLCC track team members will participate in running events only and will train at facilities at Canandaigua Academy. They will compete in four meets that will include both community colleges and four-year colleges. There will also be opportunities for student athletes to compete in the regional and national competitions. Currently, there are seven community colleges in New York state that offer track in Region III.

“The establishment of the men’s and women’s track teams is yet another avenue for FLCC to provide a well-rounded educational experience for student athletes,” said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president of FLCC. “With the addition of the track teams, we anticipate growth in our existing cross-country program as students take advantage of a wider range of athletic options.”

Coaching the men’s and women’s teams is Dr. Robert Wink, assistant professor of conservation and horticulture, and currently the men’s and women’s cross-country coach. Wink, a lifelong competitive runner as well as a competitive swimmer and triathlete, has coached the FLCC cross-country team for three years.

Intercollegiate sports teams at Finger Lakes Community College include baseball and softball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, cross country, and a nationally-recognized co-ed Woodsmen team.
