FLCC Student Receives Leaders of Promise Scholarship

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2006) — Finger Lakes Community College student Christina Schmidt has recently been named a recipient of the 2006 Phi Theta Kappa Leaders of Promise Scholarship. Schmidt, along with twenty-nine other community college students from across the nation, received this scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to further her associate degree studies.

Schmidt, of Canandaigua, is pursuing an associate in applied science degree in criminal justice. She serves as the New York Regional vice president of Phi Theta Kappa and is also an active member of the FLCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Schmidt organized a student leadership conference recently at FLCC.

The purpose of the Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program is to provide new Phi Theta Kappa members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled at a two-year college. The program also provides opportunity and encourages students to assume leadership roles by participating in society programs. Thirty members from 18 different states were selected for their leadership potential and scholastic achievement.

The FLCC Alpha Epsilon Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was chartered in 1981. To qualify for membership, full-time and part-time students must have accumulated 15 or more credit hours and have a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average.

Excellus BCBS Scholarship Encourages More Nurses for Rural Areas

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 27, 2006) — Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is endowing a $25,000 scholarship with the Finger Lakes Community College Foundation to encourage more nurses to work in rural areas. The scholarship will be named in memory of Mary E. Moynihan, R.N. of Penfield.

Moynihan, who was vice president of medical economics for Excellus BCBS, died unexpectedly on her way into work in February 2006 when heavy winds caused a large tree to fall on her car. She was 52.

A native of Penn Yan, Yates County, Moynihan was passionate about nursing education, especially in rural areas. To preserve her memory, Excellus BCBS is working with Moynihan’s friends and family to create the Mary E. Moynihan Memorial Scholarship Fund.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a Finger Lakes Community College student who is interested in nursing in a rural area upon completion of their degree, among other criteria. Areas of interest include Allegany, Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties.

“Mary was a supportive mentor and a role model for those who worked with her,” said Scott Ellsworth, regional president of Excellus BCBS. “She was a leader who knew how to put innovation into practice and someone who could convince those around her to always do the right thing. Mary began her career as a nurse and she remained a caregiver who was always concerned about the health of our members.”

The national nursing shortage has hit rural areas especially hard. A lack of health care professionals such as nurses in rural areas often means that patients have inadequate access to health care services. As a result, people in these areas might skip preventive care and needed treatments. One way to counter the shortage is to get more people from rural areas trained as nurses. Students from rural areas are often more likely to return there to practice medicine.

By choosing to endow this scholarship fund, Excellus BCBS and Mary’s family and friends ensure that this scholarship will be ongoing. Endowment gifts are never spent because the scholarship is funded exclusively from investment earnings.

“We are honored that Mary’s employer, her family, and her friends recognize the quality and focus of a nursing education at FLCC and the impact it can have on our surrounding communities,” said Amy Pauley, executive director, Finger Lakes Community College Foundation.

Tax deductible donations may be sent directly to FLCC Foundation, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua, NY 14424.

The Finger Lakes Community College Foundation Inc. is a 501(c) 3 charitable corporation established to seek financial support for the College from the private sector. The Foundation receives and manages scholarships that help deserving Finger Lakes students succeed in their chosen fields of study. The Foundation also assists the College with equipment purchases, special projects, faculty development, and special-purpose campus events. FLCC Reaches Highest Enrollment Ever in History of the College

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2006)— For the fall 2006 semester, Finger Lakes Community College reached its highest total enrollment ever in its 40-year history. A total of 5,150 students enrolled, which is an increase of 240, or 4.9 percent, over fall 2005 enrollment. Enrollment of full-time students increased by 1.8 percent to 2,647 which is also the highest full-time enrollment in the history of the College. Enrollment of part-time students increased by 8.3 percent to 2,503.

Sixty-six percent of all full-time students and 18 percent of all part-time students have enrolled in the College’s associate in arts and associate in science transfer degree programs designed to prepare graduates to pursue four-year degrees.

Eighty-three percent of all full-time enrollment comes from the five county region: Ontario (41 percent); Wayne (18 percent); Seneca (seven percent); Yates (seven percent); and Monroe (10 percent).

Nearly 24 percent of all credit course enrollment is produced at off-campus locations including the Geneva Campus Center and the Wayne County Campus Center.

“We believe that this increase in enrollment reflects the value of the education Finger Lakes Community College provides,” said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president. “Our faculty and staff remain committed to providing personal attention to ensure students’ success.”

Finger Lakes Community College enrolled its first class of 210 students in 1968. Today the College has grown considerably, offering more than 40 academic degree and certificate programs including nursing, criminal justice, therapeutic massage and integrated health care, sports and tourism studies, and biotechnology.

FLCC to Offer Childhood Teacher Education Transfer Program

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2006) — A new teacher education program in childhood education at Finger Lakes Community College recently received approval from the State University of New York. The program proposal will also be sent for approval to the New York State Department of Education. The College anticipates accepting applications for this program for the fall 2007 semester.

The associate in arts liberal arts and sciences: childhood education (teacher education transfer) degree program is designed to prepare students to transfer to baccalaureate degree programs in childhood education to become certified teachers of first- through sixth-grade students. The program introduces students to the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of education; explores the role of the teacher; provides coursework in the structure and organization of schools; and offers the opportunity for structured school observations. The program also includes the liberal arts requirements normally completed in the first two years of a four-year bachelor’s degree program.

The degree program is based on the SUNY Teacher Education Transfer Template (TETT), which was created to streamline transfer between participating SUNY two-year colleges and SUNY four-year colleges offering teacher education programs. Based on the template, a participating two-year college will offer an associate’s degree curriculum containing a general education core with three additional credits of foreign language, and a pedagogical core, with one child psychology course and one course entitled Foundations of American Education. Upon completion of such a curriculum, a student is assured that upon acceptance all curriculum coursework will transfer, based on the template, to a SUNY four-year institution offering a teacher education bachelor’s degree program. For more information on the SUNY TETT, visit www.suny.edu/EducationTransfer.

“With this new degree program, students will be better able to meet the many challenges of teacher preparation today,” said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, FLCC president. “A seamless, supported transfer process to a bachelor’s degree program allows our students to focus on learning, rather than on logistics and concerns over potential costs for additional courses at a transfer institution.”

While much of the program curriculum mirrors the current FLCC liberal arts and sciences program, the childhood education (teacher education transfer) program includes three new courses: Child Psychology, Foundations of American Education, and Schools in America: Organization and Issues, which offers a guided field observation.

The College has instituted several resources for childhood education (teacher education transfer) student advisement. In addition to admissions and support services already in place, faculty associated with the program will serve as academic advisors to discuss course selection and transfer opportunities. The College has also established an “advisor-in-residence” program in which representatives from a variety of four-year institutions visit the College to advise students interested in transferring to their institutions.

Easing the transfer process further, the College has articulation agreements specifically for teacher education with SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Brockport, Keuka College, and Roberts Wesleyan College. In addition, as an institutional member of the New York State Transfer and Articulation Association, the College sends representatives to meetings and conferences that focus on teacher education, providing students with another resource person to contact with questions about teaching requirements and programs.

Additionally, an associate in arts liberal arts and sciences: adolescent education (teacher education transfer) degree program is currently under review for approval by the State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Department of Education.

To join the mailing list to receive information about the childhood education (teacher education transfer) degree once the program has received final approval, visit www.flcc.edu/newprograms or contact the FLCC Admissions Office at (585) 394-FLCC, ext. 7278.
