FLCC Places In Pepsi NATYCAA Awards

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College recently placed 20th in the Non-Scholarship Division of the 2006 National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Awards for the 2005-2006 academic year.

FLCC placed 20th in the Non-Scholarship Division and compiled a total of 41 points.  The scores were 23.0 and 18.0 for the men's and women's teams respectively.  FLCC's sports teams include basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, baseball, softball, and woodsmen (coed).

The Pepsi NATYCAA Awards are given to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges.  The National Alliance of Two-Year Colleges Athletic Administrators is the national professional organization of all two-year college athletic administrators from throughout the United States.

FLCC Offers Credit Courses in Eight-Week “Minimesters”

 

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2006)- Finger Lakes Community College now offers full-semester credit courses in eight-week "minimesters."  The Fall Minimester 2 runs from Oct. 30-Dec. 21, 2006. Courses are offered at the Canandaigua campus, the Geneva Campus Center, and the Wayne County Campus Center.  Classes are held during the day, in the evening, and online.

These time-condensed courses offer the same academic quality and total instructional time of the College's traditional classes but can be completed in the shortened eight-week minimester format.  Students can take classes in a variety of subjects such as computers, English, math, psychology, and physical education.

FLCC Conservation and Horticulture Department Presents 2nd Annual Wine, Wings ‘n Wildlife Event

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2006) - The Finger Lakes Community College Department of Environmental Conservation and Horticulture will sponsor the 2nd annual Wine, Wings 'N Wildlife Event at Finger Lakes Community College on October 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  This educational fundraising event, focusing on predators, will benefit Braddock Bay Raptor Research, which is a not-for-profit bird of prey organization that focuses on education and research. 

The all-day event will include a variety of presentations, many of which will feature live predatory animals such as reptiles, wolves, and birds of prey, including a bald eagle.  Discussions will focus on mountain lions, coyotes, walleye and other predatory fish, predators of the insect world, plants, wild cats, and black bears in New York state.  Displays will include predator skins and skulls, wildlife photography, and information about FLCC's conservation and horticulture academic programs. 

The event is open to the public with tickets available at the door; tickets are $8 for adults (12 years of age and older), $5 for kids (2-11 years of age), and free for children (0-2 years of age).

The schedule of events is as follows:

11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

  • Presentation - Birds of Prey, featuring a live bald eagle and including a discussion of bald eagles in New York state.

 12:15 p.m. - 12:45 p.m.

  • Lunches available for purchase in the cafeteria
  • Presentations - Walleye and Other Predatory Fish, Plants with an Attitude, Predators in the Insect World, Mountain Lion, and Coyote
  • Tour of the Greenhouse

1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

  • Presentations - Walleye and Other Predatory Fish, Plants with an Attitude, Predators of the Insect World, Mountain Lion, and Coyote
  • Tour of the Greenhouse

1:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.

  • Presentation - Black Bears in New York State

3 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

  • Presentations - Walleye and Other Predatory Fish, Plants with an Attitude, and Predators in the Insect World, Wild Cats of New York State (ending at 3:45 p.m.), and Live Reptiles (ending at 3:45 p.m.)
  • Tour of the Greenhouse

4 p.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Presentation - Mission: Wolf!, featuring live wolves.

FLCC to Host an Open House at the New Wayne County Campus Center

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College will host an open house at the new Wayne County Campus Center on Tuesday, September 26, from 3 - 7 p.m. Located at 1100 Technology Parkway in Newark, the open house is free to the public and refreshments will be served.

The College's degree programs that can be started at the Wayne County Campus Center include: accounting, business administration, liberal arts and sciences, chemical dependency counseling, human services, horticulture, and natural resources conservation, among others.

Guided tours will highlight the new Wayne County Campus Center's spacious classrooms, facility, and grounds.  Information about the College's academic programs will be available.

"The new Wayne County Campus Center, formerly the Newark Center, is enabling the College to serve our students and our community in new ways," said Dr. Daniel T. Hayes, president of FLCC. "We are very pleased that we can continue our long-standing relationship with Newark and the surrounding communities."

FLCC’s Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 Presents “Tibet Today”

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2006) - The Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College, in conjunction with FLCC's Global Awareness Series, will present an exhibition of photographs entitled "Tibet Today" by photojournalist Forest McMullin of Rochester, NY. 

Located on the first floor of the Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive, the Gallery will host the exhibition Sept. 14 - Oct. 20, 2006.  McMullin will also host a reception and discussion of his work on Sept. 14 from 1-2 p.m. in the gallery.

McMullin, who graduated from RIT in 1977, works as a freelance commercial and editorial photographer.  His works include documenting the white supremacist movement in Pennsylvania, a nuclear waste site in Western New York, and a series of environmental portraits of American women in the workplace.  Additionally, McMullin was invited to take part in a Beijing-based project entitled, "Tibet in the Eyes of One Hundred Photographers" in the summer of 2005.  His works have appeared in various national and international publications, including Time, Business Week, People, Fortune, and U.S. News and World Report, among others.
