FLCC Student Receives NYS Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 31, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College student Charles A. Sheehe, of Gorham, received the 2006 New York State Sheriffs' Association Annual Scholarship. The $500 criminal justice scholarship was presented to Austin at the 22nd Annual Widmer's Honors Reception in Canandaigua.

Paul T. Phillips, FLCC associate professor and coordinator of the criminal justice program, nominated Sheehe for the award. Phillips said, "Charles is an exceptional student with a 3.6 grade point average. His intellectual and academic commitment is extraordinary and he has a strong sense of responsibility." Sheehe anticipates graduating from Finger Lakes Community College in December with a degree in criminal justice and intends to pursue a bachelor's degree followed by a career in law enforcement.

The New York State Sheriffs' Association Annual Scholarship is presented to one full-time criminal justice student at each community college in the state of New York. The criteria includes academic excellence, financial need, and a desire to pursue a career in criminal justice.

FLCC Announces Annual Business Symposium and Competition Results

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 26, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College recently hosted the 15th Annual Business Symposium and Competition for area high schools. Sponsored by the FLCC Business department, this year's event hosted 300 students from area high schools who competed in seven business categories including accounting problem solving, communications, economics, international business, keyboarding, law, and marketing and advertising. The results follow:

FLCC Alumni Association Honors Former President of the College

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 25, 2006) -  The Finger Lakes Community College Alumni Association recently awarded its Exceptional Service Award to President Emeritus Dr. Charles J. Meder. The Exceptional Service Award recognizes one or more of the following: outstanding contributions to the campus experience and commitment to students, development of innovative programs having significant impact upon students, and outstanding contributions to the Alumni Association. The award was presented during the annual Alumni Association Awards Celebration.  

In 1967 Dr. Meder was hired as Dean of the College and was appointed President in 1972 and retired 20 years later. His tenure began when the College was housed in office and other buildings in downtown Canandaigua. Under his leadership, the College moved to the present campus, developed two other sites offering classes in Newark and Geneva, and created the Institute for Continuing and Community education initiatives. Additionally, enrollment grew from less than 300 students to nearly 4,000, the budget increased from one million to 16 million, and employees increased from 20 to more than 300.

During his tenure Dr. Meder held leadership roles in many community and civic organizations including: the board of directors of the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce, the chair of Rochester Area Colleges, member of the Lincoln-Chase Advisory Board, and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Dr. Meder continued his active lifestyle after retiring and served as Interim President of St. Bernard's School of Healing & Ministry, participated in Catholic diocese planning; served as trustee of St Ambrose Parish, and as Eucharistic Minister at Rochester General Hospital and currently volunteers in that position at St. Ann's Community.

A Rochester native, Dr. Meder has a bachelor's degree from SUNY at Brockport, a master's degree in history from Lehigh University, and a doctoral degree in social science from Syracuse University.  Before arriving in Canandaigua he taught at Aquinas Institute, the Rochester City School District, St. John Fisher College, and Mesa Community College in Arizona.  He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force Reserve.

According to Ethan Fogg '00, president of the alumni association, "We are proud to honor Dr. Meder for his commitment to the community college concept in New York state and for positioning the College as a strong, contributing member of the system. He is also being recognized for supporting faculty and student resourcefulness which resulted in new programs and opportunities, for valuing the Alumni Association and its importance for keeping graduates connected to the College, and for the personal and political relationships that permitted the College to grow and flourish."

FLCC Names Two Distinguished Alumni

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 25, 2006) — Finger Lakes Community College recently selected two graduates to receive the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Awards. Each award recognizes the accomplishments and service of FLCC alumni to their professions, communities, and the College. The recipients, who were recently honored at the FLCC Alumni Association Awards Celebration, are Laurie Gross '84 of Canandaigua and Suzanne Bamonto Graney, Ph.D. '91 of Spencerport.

Gross is CEO of the Canandaigua YMCA and has been with the organization for more than 16 years. Prior to her position with the YMCA, Gross was a math teacher at Canandaigua Academy. She has received many awards including the Outstanding Leadership and Service Awards as well as the Outstanding Young American Award from the YMCA; and the Youth Development Award from the Canandaigua Business and Professional Women's Club.

Gross is a member of the Canandaigua Kiwanis Club and served on its board of directors in 2001. She is active in the Ontario Charities Classic, currently serving as the board secretary and chair of the main event committee. Additionally, Gross has served on the board of the Canandaigua Area Chamber of Commerce and as the volunteer coordinator for the local and regional National Football League/Gatorade Punt, Pass, and Kick Program. She has also served on the FLCC Campus Community Coalition.

Gross earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Nazareth College and an associate's degree in liberal arts and sciences from FLCC, where she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.

Graney is an assistant professor of the School Psychology Program at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to her role at RIT, Graney was a school psychologist in Vero Beach, Fla.

Graney is a member of the National and New York Association of School Psychologists and has previously received training and research grants in the area of psychology. She received the Oregon School Psychologists' Association Liz Gullion Award. Additionally, Graney's work has been published in "School Psychology Review" and the "Journal of Educational and Psychological Measurement." Graney is a member of the Ad-Hoc Research Committee at RIT and a Chapter D Representative of the New York Association of School Psychologists.

Graney received a doctorate degree in school psychology from the University of Oregon, a bachelor's degree in psychology from SUNY Geneseo, and an associate's degree in liberal arts and sciences from FLCC, where she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes achievement in one or more of the following areas: professional achievement as evidenced by performance with distinction in the field; community service as evidenced by serving with distinction in civic service, or philanthropic organizations; service to FLCC as demonstrated by outstanding loyalty and service over a period of several years.

FLCC Employees Receive SUNY Chancellor’s Awards

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 23, 2006) — Four Finger Lakes Community College employees were honored recently with the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for 2006, considered the highest honor award presented by the SUNY system. Dr. Marylou E. Boynton of Geneseo and Barbara J. Murphy of Rochester received the Excellence in Teaching Award; Patricia A. Malinowski of Canandaigua received the Excellence in Faculty Service Award; and Stephanie Olsen of Penn Yan received the Excellence in Professional Service Award. The recipients were recognized at FLCC’s annual Employee Recognition Program and at the College’s 38th Annual Commencement Ceremonies on May 21.

Boynton, professor of social science, joined the FLCC faculty in 1985 as an assistant professor of social science and was promoted to her current position in 2003. She holds a doctorate degree in education from the University of Rochester, a master’s degree in early childhood education from Case Western Reserve University, and a bachelor’s degree in English from Wellesley College. She has taught a wide range of courses, including Introduction to Psychology, Child Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology. Students note that by using a variety of methods, she continually pushes them to clearly express their ideas about human development and psychology. She utilizes hands-on activities to help students understand scientific methodology and guides them throughout the learning process, encouraging them to meet with her outside of class for individual consultation on projects. Additionally, Boynton collaborated with others in developing writing-intensive courses at FLCC and emphasizes writing skills by offering these types of courses and serving on the advisory panel for the College’s writing support center, The Write Place.

Murphy, associate professor of developmental studies, has been with the College since 1990. She received her master’s degree in English from SUNY at Buffalo, her bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY New Paltz, and her associate’s in arts from Monroe Community College. Her course offerings span a variety of subjects, including College Composition, Effective Reading I and II, College Study Skills, Freshman English, and Public Speaking. Murphy teaches at both the Canandaigua campus and the Newark Campus Center. According to students, Murphy offers a comfortable classroom setting and fosters an atmosphere of acceptance.

Malinowski, professor of developmental studies and chair of the developmental studies department, joined FLCC in 1987. She holds a master’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University and a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Fredonia. Malinowski has developed both credit and noncredit courses, has participated in placement and retention committees, and has served on several college governance committees. Additionally, she has been instrumental in the development of literacy workshop programs and special programs for high-risk students. Colleagues note that Malinowski is committed to providing a high caliber of developmental studies services not only at the Canandaigua campus, but also at both the campus centers in Geneva and Newark.

Olsen, academic support center specialist for the developmental studies department, joined FLCC in 1993. She earned a master’s degree in psychology from Aalborg University (Denmark), a master’s degree in English from Arhus University (Denmark), and a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Brockport. She tutored students at the Newark Campus Center from 1993-2005 and currently, Olsen tutors in a wide range of subjects and provides assistance with library and computer services at the Geneva Campus Center. Students and colleagues note that Olsen works jointly with students to help them understand how to improve their work. With positive feedback and constructive criticism, she guides students through the revision process. Olsen has enrolled in a variety of classes, both traditional and online, in order to experience firsthand the challenges that students face and expand her skill set in order to better address their needs.

FLCC Announces Summer Hours

 

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 18, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College will operate on a modified summer schedule from June 5 - Aug. 4.  To meet the needs of summer students and campus visitors, operating hours for most offices will be Monday - Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.; however, some offices may be closed on Fridays.  In addition, the College will be closed July 3 and July 4 for Independence Day.

The following will be open on Fridays: the Admissions Office, the Bursar's Office, the Center for Advisement and Personal Development (including Career Services), the Charles J. Meder Library, the Child Care Center, the Financial Aid Office, the FLCC Geneva Campus Center, Professional Studies and Continuing Education, and the Registrar's Office.

The following will be closed on Fridays: the Academic Support Center, the Campus Book Store, Student Health Services, the Student Life Office, and the FLCC Newark Campus Center.

The Charles J. Meder Library will offer the following tentative schedule, with any changes to be posted at the Library:

May 22 - 26: open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., closed on weekends.

May 30 - Aug. 18: open Monday - Wednesday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Thursday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.; and closed on weekends.

Aug. 21 - 25: open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., closed weekends.

Regular Library hours resume Monday, Aug. 28: Monday - Thursday, 7:45 a.m. - 10 p.m.; Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 4 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.; and Sunday, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Visitors are advised to call the Canandaigua campus at (585) 394-3500, the FLCC Geneva Campus Center at (315) 789-6701, or the FLCC Newark Campus Center at (315) 331-9098 in advance to verify office hours or to make appointments to meet with counselors during the summer months.

Beginning Aug. 7, the College will resume its normal schedule. Hours of operation will be Monday - Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The FLCC Newark Campus Center will relocate in July 2006; fall 2006 classes will be held at the new FLCC Wayne County Campus Center located at 1100 Technology Parkway, off Route 88 south, in Newark.

FLCC Grants Emeritus Status to Biology Professor

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 18, 2006) - The Finger Lakes Community College Board of Trustees recently granted emeritus status to Edward M. Morrell, of Victor. Morrell, a professor of biology, has worked at FLCC for 35 years.

Morrell's teaching specialties include: biology for non-majors, human genetics, recombinant DNA methods, electrophoresis, spectrophotometric methods, and human anatomy. Over the years, many colleagues and students have noted his determination to make the science courses he offered intelligible to the widest range of abilities. He is known for his entertaining impressions of John Belushi as the "Samurai Chemist" explaining the concept of the atoms, jumping on tables to explain surface tension, and bouncing off walls to convey molecular movement. His less-traditional teaching methods serve to engage students and illustrate scientific principles in entertaining and unique ways.

Morrell developed the biology of man sequence, an innovative approach to teach non-science majors biology. He was also instrumental in development of the Biotechnology degree program with courses like electrophoresis and spectrophotometric methods. He has recently rewritten the College's lab manuals for biology of man I and II. While at the College, he has been involved in numerous committees. Additionally, Morrell has offered a variety of lectures, special presentations and workshops to audiences such as elementary and high school teachers on the subjects of "Biology of Water" and "Human Birth Defects."

In 1991 Morrell was awarded the State University Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Morrell earned a master's degree in zoology from SUNY Brockport, a bachelor's degree in biology from St. John Fisher.

FLCC Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients at 22nd Annual Widmer’s Honors Reception

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 16, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College announced the recipients of more than 80 scholarships and awards at the 22nd Annual Widmer's Honors Reception held recently at the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua. The FLCC Foundation and Centerra Wine Company co-sponsored the event.

Foundation Board Chair Scott B. Trumbower, and FLCC President Daniel T. Hayes, Ph.D., presented the scholarships to full- and part-time students returning to FLCC in fall 2006 or transferring to four-year colleges and universities.

Trumbower explained, "This event continues to be a wonderful way to bring the benefactors and students together so we can publicly thank individuals, corporations, and organizations for their generosity, as well as honor the talents and academic success of our students."

Students apply for and are selected to receive the awards based on a variety of criteria relating to major, grade point average, and intended occupation. The awards range from $250 to the cost of one year's tuition for the 2006 - 07 academic year.

FLCC to Host Computer Forensics and Investigations Seminar

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 16, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College will sponsor a Computer Forensics and Investigations seminar on June 3, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in room B307 on the Canandaigua campus.  This free event, which is open to the public, will feature industry-standard forensics and investigation computer tools.  FLCC adjunct instructor Peter Coons, EnCase certified practitioner and director of digital forensics and collections at DocuLegal in Rochester, will serve as the trainer.

Coons will demonstrate the use of the leading computer forensic tool, Guidance Software's EnCase Forensic, which is used in law enforcement labs for digital evidence collection; in commercial settings for incident response and information assurance; and by the FBI and Department of Defense to detect domestic and international threats.  Seminar attendees will be introduced to EnCase Forensic through a hands-on lab experience.

According to Sandra Brown, chairperson of the FLCC computing sciences department, "this exciting new information technology field is growing rapidly.  Employment opportunities in the computer forensics field are available to people with the ability to utilize industry-standard software, such as EnCase Forensic."

FLCC Hosts 38th Annual Commencement Ceremonies May 21

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 2, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College will host its Thirty-Eighth Annual Commencement Ceremonies Sunday, May 21, at 12:30 (Ceremony A) and 4 p.m. (Ceremony B) in the FLCC Gymnasium on the FLCC Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Drive. Receptions will follow the ceremonies. Tickets are not required, and friends and family members are encouraged to attend.

The first ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. for the following degrees: Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences; Associate in Science degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Biotechnology, Engineering Science, Environmental Studies, and Physical Education Studies; Associate in Applied Science degrees in Architectural Design and Drafting, Mechanical Design and Drafting, Natural Resources Conservation, Natural Resource Conservation: Law Enforcement, Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Development, Registered Nursing, Therapeutic Massage/Integrated Health Care; and Certificates in EMT-Paramedic, Ornamental Horticulture, Outdoor Recreation, and Taxidermy.

The second ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. for the following degrees: Associate in Science degrees in Business Administration, Communications, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Human Services, Music, Music Recording Technology, Sports and Tourism Studies, and Theatre Arts; Associate in Applied Science degrees in Accounting, Administrative Assistant, Business Administration, Chemical Dependency Counseling, Criminal Justice, Financial Services, Graphic Design, Hotel and Resort Management, Information Technology, Paralegal, Retail Business Management, and Tourism Management; and Certificates in Applied Computer Applications, Criminal Justice, and Office Technology.

More than 800 students will graduate from FLCC this May. Ranging from natural resources conservation to music recording technology, the College offers more than 40 academic degree and certificate programs to prepare graduates for careers or transfer to four-year institutions.

Slightly more than half of this year's graduating class will earn associate in arts and/or associate in science degrees, preparing them for transfer to four-year colleges and universities, while others will graduate with associate in applied science degrees and certificates in preparation for careers.

Commencement remarks will be given by Edward M. Morrell, professor of biology, at the 12:30 p.m. ceremony, and by Milton L. Johnson, assistant professor of speech, at the 4 p.m. ceremony.

The Nursing Advancement Ceremony, a special commencement ceremony for nursing students, will take place May 21 at 9 a.m. in the FLCC Gymnasium. Admission to the Nursing Advancement Ceremony is free and open to friends and family members of FLCC students who are graduating from the College's nursing program.
