Two FLCC Faculty Members Awarded For Environmental Camp
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 27, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College employees Berna Ticonchuk, greenhouse conservation technician, and Edwin Moberg, professor of environmental conservation and horticulture, recently received the "Community Partner Award" from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County. Ticonchuk and Moberg were recognized for their involvement in Environmental Careers Outdoors (ECO), an environmental camp for middle school students with an interest in horticulture. Moberg participated in the three-year developmental phase of the program; Ticonchuk works directly with students that participate in ECO each year.
Finger Lakes Community College and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County offered ECO collaboratively with contributions and participation from Monroe County 4-H, Broccolo Tree & Landscape, Henrietta Schools, and Tinker Nature Center. Through ECO, students learned to climb trees with safety harnesses and ropes, use GPS navigation, and care for plants using basic horticulture skills, such as planting and pruning. In addition, they were given an opportunity to canoe in the Honeoye Lake inlet at the FLCC Muller Field Station and lead a guided tour of the Tinker Nature Center.
The Community Partner Award is awarded to individuals and organizations that provide quality programs to the community. Moberg commented, "It is an honor to be granted such a seldom-given award." This year, ECO was among four recipients awarded by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County.

Scholars Event Brings Explorer Scientist Robert Ballard to FLCC
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (April 26, 2006) - On September 20, 2006, the Finger Lakes Community College Foundation will present two extraordinary people at the annual Visiting Scholars Series, which will be held at the new Constellation Brands - Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (the MAC) located on the Finger Lakes Community College campus.
National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Robert Ballard, one of the world's foremost deep-sea scientists, will be the speaker at the event's two presentations. He will address students at an afternoon event on campus and give his keynote speech, World Citizenship Through Exploration, History and Education, at the evening presentation at the MAC, open to the public. George McClellan Ewing, Sr., Chairman and Editor of the Messenger Post Newspapers, will be honored at the event as the 2006 recipient of the FLCC Foundation Award, for his contributions to the community.
An oceanographer, inventor, visionary, marine archeologist and educator, Ballard is most widely known for his discovery of the Titanic in 1985. He has found numerous other significant shipwrecks, including the German battleship Bismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown (sunk in the World War II Battle of Midway), and most recently John F. Kennedy's boat, PT-109.
He has made several major scientific discoveries during his career using both the manned and unmanned submersible vehicles he has helped develop. In 1977, he led an expedition in the Galápagos Rift that found hydrothermal vents from the Earth's crust in the seafloor, along with their exotic ecosystems, including huge tubeworms. The discovery solved the chemical mystery of why seawater is salty - and Ballard called the alien creatures living in and around the deep sea vents "the most fascinating thing I've ever seen."
