FLCC Bridge Program Offers Hospitality Certification
Canandaigua, N.Y. (June 24, 2009) – The Finger Lakes Community College Bridge Program will offer the START (Skills Tasks and Results Training) program for hospitality industry certification. The nationally recognized training program, which is endorsed by the American Hotel & Lodging Association Educational Institute www.ahlei.org and the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association www.nyshta.org, will prepare students for twelve major line-level positions in the hospitality industry including guest services, food and beverage, and housekeeping jobs for hotels, clubs, cruise lines, wineries, convention centers, spas, and recreational facilities. The training prepares students to test for an industry recognized certification and offers additional certification opportunities. The training includes a 96 hour internship component at the Ramada Geneva Lakefront hotel and 96 hours of classroom training.
FLCC to Host 2008 Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council Conference
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College will host the Finger Lakes Regional EMS Council’s 2008 Conference on Feb. 22 and 23.
The event will include pre-conference workshops on Friday, Feb. 22 from 7:45 a.m.-4 p.m. at the FLCC Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney St. Workshop topics include, Blood Borne Pathogens, Blood Glucose Testing for EMT-B, Aspirin Administration, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Creating a Culture of EMS Safety.
The conference will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at FLCC’s Canandaigua Campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr. Saturday’s schedule will include keynote speaker, Guy Haskell, Ph.D., NREMT-P presenting, “Emergency Ethics: Morality, Law and Conflict in EMS & Real Lawsuits in EMS: Diary of an Expert Witness.” There also will be two workshop sessions with various topic choices including, 10 Reasons Why We Get Hollered at in the ER, The Patient in Pain: EMS Role in Proper Treatment, Geriatric Emergencies, Patient Restraint, Dignity at the End of Life, Customer Service, Pediatric Trauma, and Heat and Cold Emergencies.
All workshops will be presented by regional instructors. Continuing education credits will be given for attendance at keynote and workshop sessions.

FLCC Offers “Tree Culture and Maintenance” Course in Geneva
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (January 15, 2008) – Finger Lakes Community College’s “Tree Culture and Maintenance” course will be offered at the Geneva Campus Center, 63 Pulteney St. The course will be held on Monday evenings from 6 – 8:50 p.m. during the spring 2008 semester, which runs from Jan. 28 to May 16.
This course will provide future arborists and homeowners alike with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully select, plant, and care for trees in an urban environment. This course addresses the underlying biology of secondary plant growth and teaches correct pruning and shaping techniques to enhance future growth of young trees. Students will also learn how to identify trees and select tree species appropriate for the planting site, how to prepare the planting bed for optimum plant health, and how to diagnose common tree disorders.
This course will also be offered on Tuesday afternoons from 2 – 4:50 p.m. at FLCC’s Canandaigua campus, 4355 Lakeshore Dr.

FLCC to Host Program for Adults Interested in Attending College
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2007) – Are you interested in returning to college or attending for the first time? Admissions and financial aid counselors will be on hand to answer your questions and help you feel at ease about a new academic path. FLCC Offers New Online Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2007) – The Finger Lakes Community College Division of Professional Studies and Continuing Education offers a new, non-credit, online Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program.
Participants in this 485-hour online program will learn the basics of animal anatomy, physiology, and biology as they relate to the care and treatment of common pets, livestock, and lab animals. Students gain the essential skills needed to assist veterinary nurses in all aspects of basic treatment, surgery, and radiology, while also becoming proficient in the administrative practices and procedures involved in running a veterinary office.
Kathy Ruane, chief instructor of the Veterinary Assistant Certificate Program, says, “I know firsthand just how rewarding and satisfying a career in veterinary care can be. People entering the field today are lucky because it offers more opportunities now than ever before. FLCC Nurse Assistant Training Program Seeks Students for September Session
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Aug. 16, 2007) — Finger Lakes Community College continually meets the rapidly increasing need for nursing assistants through its Nurse Assistant Program in Professional Studies and Continuing Education (PSCE). Whether starting a career, seeking a career change, or desiring to gain new skills for job advancement, the Nurse Assistant Program offers opportunities for students of all ages to prepare for employment in one of the country’s fastest growing professions. The Nurse Assistant Program is usually offered 10 times each year and currently, the only remaining openings for 2007 are in the September class, which takes place Sept. 17-Oct. 12, at FLCC’s Geneva Campus Center.
The four-week intensive course prepares students to take the New York state clinical and written certification examination. The curriculum covers patient safety, infection control procedures, patient communication, diet therapy, pre- and post-operative care, anatomy, physiology, circulation, and respiratory care. The challenging program also goes beyond state requirements by including self-development, job seeking and retention skills, and enhanced on-the-job nurse assistant skills. In addition, students benefit from interacting with future colleagues.
“The program’s success has recruiters setting up interviews with students even before classes have ended, and 84 percent of our graduates are employed after receiving their Nurse Assistant Certification” said Don Friday, dean of professional studies and continuing education. “In just two years, the program has grown from 40 graduates to the projected 95 graduates this year. It is anticipated that by 2008, there will be 125 graduates.”
Students must be at least 18 years of age to enter the program. Candidates for the course may contact their county Workforce Development Offices for possible funding. FLCC and TV Course Offer GED Preparation
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Aug. 7, 2007) – Finger Lakes Community College is offering guidance and educational tools to supplement a television course that helps people prepare for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) exam. Beginning Sept. 10, “GED Connection” will air on Mondays from 6 – 7 p.m. on FLTV Channel 12, with repeat broadcasts on Saturdays from
l – 2 p.m.
Lessons will also air on WXXI Channel 21 in Rochester and WCNY Channel 24 in Syracuse. Consult your local television listings or contact the television station for more information.
Through the telecourse and FLCC, students will be able to view the lessons, complete workbook assignments, and speak with a tutor each week. The course covers the five major subject areas on the exam: writing, reading, social studies, science, and mathematics. Lessons focus on the workplace and demonstrate practical applications of the skills and knowledge learned for the GED exam. Assigned tutors will be available for assistance in all subject areas. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.

This 26-part series follows the lives of six characters of various ethnic backgrounds. In addition to learning English from the “Café” characters, viewers will gain insight into other aspects of U.S. culture, such as seeking citizenship, renting apartments, and finding jobs.
Audiences will learn to speak, read, and write English by watching the lessons, completing workbook assignments, and contacting their FLCC tutors each week. In addition, FLCC will provide the necessary workbooks.
