FLCC Offers Three-Week January Courses

Canandaigua, N.Y. - Current students as well as those home on break from other colleges can get ahead on earning credits by enrolling in Finger Lakes Community College’s January courses.

Registration for the three-week Jan Plan session is now under way and continues until classes begin. Most classes are three credits and run from Dec. 28 to Jan. 15. The cost is $138 per credit hour. Read more

FLCC MUSICIANS TO GIVE HOLIDAY, JAZZ CONCERTS

Canandaigua, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2009) - Singers and musicians based at Finger Lakes Community College will give seven performances, a mix of holiday and jazz concerts, in December.

 All concerts are free and open to the public.

 “Holiday Treasures” will be shared by the Camerata, a vocal group comprised of 24 to 28 students and semi-professional singers from Canandaigua and neighboring communities, including Bloomfield, Clifton Springs, Geneva, Ionia, Manchester, Shortsville and Waterloo. Dennis Maxfield directs the Camerata with Anthony D’Agostino accompanying on the keyboard.

The Camerata concerts will be held:

Saturday, Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. at the Farmington Friends Church, 187 County Road 8, Farmington

Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. at St. Francis Church, 12 Church St., Phelps Read more

FLCC Exhibit Celebrates Alumni Artists

Canandaigua, N.Y. - Three Finger Lakes Community College alumni who have met with success in the art world will exhibit their work at the college from Nov. 19 to Jan. 25. 

The Biennial Alumni Exhibition features the paintings of Meredith Mallwitz ‘98 of Farmington, ceramic work by Bradley Kellogg ‘76 of Canandaigua and graphic designs by Elaine Gotham ‘78 of Naples. Read more

FLCC Highlights Native American Poetry, History

CANANDAIGUA - A Native American poet and an expert on the Delaware Indians, the first inhabitants of New York City, will speak at Finger Lakes Community College as part of the college’s Diversity Series this month.

Susan Deer Cloud, a Catskill native of Mohawk, Seneca and Blackfoot lineage, will give a reading on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Honors House, corner of Routes 5 and 20 and Lakeshore Drive. The reading will be followed by a spoken-word open mike with the student literary club, Writers Bloc. Read more

FLCC to Host Lecture on Seneca History, Culture

Canandaigua, N.Y. - Contrary to popular belief, wampum, the strands of polished beads used by Indians, is not money. It’s a mnemonic device that records important information and ideas.

So says Peter Jemison, a Seneca Indian and manager of the Ganondagan State Historic Site in Victor. He will give a talk on Seneca history and culture on Monday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. at Finger Lakes Community College. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Stage 13 on the second floor of the main campus at 3325 Marvin Sands Drive. Read more

FLCC to Mark Veterans Day with Ceremony

Canandaigua, N.Y.  -  In honor of the students, faculty, staff and community members who have served in the military, Finger Lakes Community College will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m.

The observance, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the FLCC gymnasium at the back of the main building, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive. Visitors should leave extra time for parking due to construction on campus and use parking lot D, behind the main building. Read more

Blues to Fill FLCC’s Honors House Nov. 6

Canandaigua, NY - As part of its Words & Music concert series, Finger Lakes Community College’s Honors House will feature a night of blues music with two solo acts, Steve Grills and Buford, Friday, Nov. 6.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Honors House at the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Routes 5 and 20. It is free and open to the public. Read more

Electronic Catalog Saves Printing 1.9 Million Pages

Canandaigua, N.Y.  - As part of an effort to model sustainable practices, Finger Lakes Community College has ceased routine publication of thousands of copies of its annual catalog.

The catalog is now posted as a portable document file, or PDF, on the college’s Web site: www.flcc.edu/catalog. Read more

New FLCC Foundation Scholarship Honors POW/MIAs

Canandaigua, N.Y.  - A community organization has created a new Finger Lakes Community College Foundation scholarship in memory of prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action.

The Prisoners of War and Missing in Action Marathon Team Inc., from Hamlin, Monroe County, spent 10 years raising money through donations, fundraisers and private funds to create the POW/MIA Scholarship for FLCC students.  Read more

FLCC Runners Prepare for Cross Country Championships

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Finger Lakes Community College’s lineup for next weekend’s cross country championships includes seasoned competitors and one woman plucked from a college gym class after a coach saw her run.

FLCC will host the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 7. Read more
