Best-selling Author Ann Patchett to visit FLCC

Canandaigua, N.Y. -  Renowned author Ann Patchett will visit Finger Lakes Community College Thursday, March 25, treating her audience to a reading from her award-winning novel “Bel Canto.”

“Bel Canto,” described as a tragicomic novel, explores the relationships that develop during a terrorist takeover that goes awry at a party at a South American embassy.   Read the full post »

FLCC Lecture: Women Photographers in Native Communities

Canandaigua, N.Y. - A visiting lecturer at Finger Lakes Community College will give an illustrated talk Tuesday, March 23, on enterprising women photographers who visited Native American communities at the turn of the 20th century.

The lecture by Susan Bernardin, chair of women’s and gender studies and associate professor of English at SUNY Oneonta, is based on a book she co-authored, called “Trading Gazes.”  It tells the story of white women who found personal and professional fulfillment working in embattled Native communities in the late 19th and early 20th century. Bernardin will also show a sampling of rarely-seen photos from the book.   Read the full post »

FLCC Woodsmen Teams Compete in Cobleskill

Canandaigua, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College woodsmen teams competed in a lumberjack competition hosted by SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, March 6, along with six other schools.

Paul Smith’s College men’s team placed first in their division with 662 points. The FLCC men’s first team placed second with 566 points ahead of teams from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), SUNY Cobleskill, West Virginia University and the University of Connecticut.   Read the full post »

Cougars: Are They in New York State?

Canandaigua, N.Y. - A Finger Lakes Community College professor will review the evidence of cougar, or mountain lion, sightings in upstate New York during a lecture on Monday, March 22.

The talk by John VanNiel, professor of environmental conservation and horticulture, is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Finger Lakes Community College, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, in Room D214 on the second floor.   Read the full post »

Plein-Air Painter to Give Demonstration at FLCC

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y.  - Plein-air painter Douglas Smith will open an exhibit representing 30 years of work and give a demonstration at Finger Lakes Community College on Thursday, March 25.

Plein-air is a French term meaning “in the open air.” It is used by painters who seek to capture effects of light and atmosphere in their work, often by completing it outdoors.   Read the full post »

FLCC Breaks Ground on Student Services Center

Canandaigua, N.Y. - Finger Lakes Community College broke ground Friday, March 5, on its 78,000-square-foot Student Services Center, which will be the first LEED certified public building in Ontario County.

LEED, short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council. It provides third-party verification that a building was designed for energy savings, water efficiency, reduced carbon-dioxide emissions, improved indoor air quality, and stewardship of resources.    Read the full post »

FLCC Discussion: What Makes an Athena Winner?

Canandaigua, N.Y. -  Recipients of the Canandaigua ATHENA Award, given each November to a woman for professional excellence and community service, will gather at Finger Lakes Community College on Tuesday, March 9, to share their life experiences that led to success.

FLCC Guest Speaker: Victorians Don’t Travel Light

Canandaigua, N.Y. - Visitors at a special event Thursday, March 11, at Finger Lakes Community College will find out what it was like to travel in the Victorian era.

Mary Jeanne Bialas, a drama instructor and educator on the culture of the late 1800s, will give an interactive presentation called “Trunks and Travel: A 19th Century Journey” at 12:30 p.m. in Stage 13 on the second floor of the main campus, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive.   Read the full post »

Blues Man Dan Bliss to Stop at FLCC on Northern U.S. Tour

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. -  As part of a tour through the Northeast and Midwest, Kansas City blues musician Dan Bliss brings his finger picking acoustic guitar style to Finger Lakes Community College Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m.

The concert will be held at FLCC’s Honors House, 4340 Lakeshore Drive, across from the main campus in Canandaigua. The event is free and open to the public.   Read the full post »

FLCC to Host Emergency Medical Services Conference

CANANDAIGUA - Finger Lakes Community College will host the two-day Finger Lakes Regional EMS Conference 2010 on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27.

The event starts with workshops at the Geneva Campus Center at 63 Pulteney St. on Friday and continues with the main conference at the Canandaigua campus on Marvin Sands Drive on Saturday.

This annual conference keeps emergency medical service workers up-to-date with workshop sessions on medical techniques, legal issues and new information on medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. There is even a workshop on the latest drugs EMS professionals are encountering on the streets.   Read the full post »
