Local Metal Sculptor’s Work to be Exhibited at FLCC

Canandaigua, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2010)  - Yates County sculptor Sam Castner, who completed a piece for the TV show “Extreme Makeover,” will display works fashioned with scrap and recycled metals at the Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at Finger Lakes Community College from Feb. 4 to March 12.

Castner’s exhibit features two opening events:

  •  Feb. 4, 1 to 3 p.m., an informal discussion with Sam Castner.
  • Feb. 5, 5 to 7 p.m., an opening reception sponsored by the FLCC Foundation.

Both events will be held in the gallery on the main campus at 3325 Marvin Sands Drive. They are free and open to the public.

The show will feature a broad spectrum of Castner’s past and recent work. The artist finds his inspiration from the cutoffs, remnant plumbing fittings, and nuts and bolts that would be abandoned and left for either a landfill or metal recycler. Transforming this metal, often into large spheres, may require thousands of small tack welds to secure the pieces together.

Castner completed a piece for ABC-TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” for a home in Geneva. His work can be found in private residences and at several local wineries.   Read the full post »
